ive just put the engine into the mini (rod change) but im having difficulty finding 1st and 2nd, i can get the other three quite easily.

the gearbox was rebuilt by a reputable mini specialist, i cant think of any reasons why its playing up, anybody got some ideas?

i was also reading the manual with rocker adjustments and it says to put the car in gear and move it back and forward, but its very difficult to move the car in 4th? do i need to apply a bit more force?

thanks for any help,

cheers Leighton

To do your rockers, take your spark plugs out, and if the car is on a flat you should be able to rock it by yourself. It will take a bit of a shove but nothing you shouldnt be able to manage. It's still possible with spark plugs in, just harder due to compression.

you'll never get a good selection unless you've got the engine steadies done up - the rods will be moving the motor around

also makes it that much harder to do the rockers...

Can you just puill across for reverse and not have to lift the gearstick? if so my money is the plate at the bottom underneath the selector being in the wrong way, instead of locking you out of reverse its stopping you from geting 1st/2nd. The lockout tab should be on the left side when it's sitting in the car properly.

With adjusting the rockers, I've always just got a short wire with a spade terminal on one end, bare wire on the other. Plug it onto the solinoid at the crank terminal, and jump it over to the battery terminal on the solinoid to turn the motor over to where you want it.
Make sure ignition is off and gearbox in neutral first!
Short 'taps' of the wire work best.
If you wind it over a little far, turn it back with the fan.
I've done it this way countless times, works a treat :D

male and Femal toggles on the back of the motor are a spline or two out

I also use the rocking method with the spark plugs out but sometimes its a good idea to have a couple of bricks waiting a bit further back but on a flat would be highly recomended
