Hey,

New to Australian mini's...

Recently bought a 1970 Morris mini K.

Trying to see how original the car is, the car is dated on the plate as being produced 1/70 and most of the components are stamped 12/69 which would seem to make sense...

The engine numbers ending digits look to have been ground and re stamped at some point...

Attached are a few pics of the plates etc, Does everything look ok and as it's meant to for this car or are there some discrepancies with regards to some things?

I can't find any stamping on the firewall but I'm not sure exactly it's meant to be located.

Any input greatly appreciated.

this is on the firewall...

I have the original owners book etc and the numbers all match with regards to engine and chassis

Thanks!

Milly

looks lovely and original to me :)

my K was originally cadet blue and had horrid dark green house paint over it. I loved the cadet blue that was in the boot though...

some will tell you the ID plate should be stamped from the back, but I've seen a lot of cars with it stamped from the front like that. I reckon the rear stamping was done by a machine, and the front stampings done by hand when the machine was broken. Those ID plates were introduced in January '70, and your car being that month (cool!) it may be one of the first that got the ID plate put on it.

The number on the radiator shroud should match the ID plate, and should have the prefixed YG2S1, yours might not have been stamped, or may be covered up. If you can get your finger under the shroud, or use a mirror, you might find it.

The number on the firewall should be behind the clutch master cylinder, just below the paint code sticker. It may have been missed, or may be covered up.

Also have a look in the passenger side of the channel at the back of the engine bay (where the rear lip of the bonnet goes when you shut it), the car number might be stamped in there. I've only ever seen a couple of cars that had it stamped there, and none of mine have had it.

45 years ago when these cars were sausages being pumped out of a factory, not all of the employees were "fully engaged" in what they were doing - some cars have the wrong numbers, some numbers upside down, some stamped from one side of the car and others from the other side of the car, and all sorts of weirdness. Don't get too hung up on it...

Don't think the firewall should be stamped. Looks very original. Date codes could be anywhere from 6 months prior to the build date as some components were UK built or stored on the shelf.

More pics please. :D

Cool!

Yea im not sure about the number stamped into the Scuttle...feels like there might be something there but the paint is covering it. pretty confident that the prexifed YG2S1 ain't stamped on the rad cowell.

The main concern for me was the engine number...the car has been in the same family from new up until about 2009/10 then someone else and now me. there if loads of history with it and throughout all of the documents there is no mention of engine change etc, there is however receipts for head work..and pretty much anything imaginable from 1970 up to the current date now. i would Imagine with the history being as thorough as it is if there was an engine change etc it would have been documented.

I will go and have a check for the firewall stamping now. I'm pretty good with all UK minis but the Aussie ones have me puzzled haha..

Do you have any photos of engine number stamping? the thing I'm most curious about is the font, if the font is correct in pretty sure the modification to the number would have been an in factory one where someone has made a mistake etc...

and yea it is pretty cool that the plate may have been one of the first ones! maybe even the first one!! thats gotta add at least 10k in value yea ? ;)

Milly

The engine number stamping looks good. Deep holes for the rivets and the Aust Symbol. They should be 1/4 inch in height. I remember the original stamps were quite thick like yours.
A lot of them now are stamped in 6mm and thin because that is what they sell on ebay now.

The number is definitely on the rad shroud, but they weren't very deep, it doesn't take much paint to fill it up.

The stamping is indeed 1/4" high... There is no doubt about it that the last 5 digits and the Aus stamp have been ground at some point and re stamped, do you think it's pretty safe to assume this happened at the time of manufacturing and amended in the factory as if it were a mistake by an employe? I would Imagine it would be pretty difficult to get the Aus stamp...and not really worth while for a car such as a mini "K" if it were a cover up job.
