Post subject:  Rear Seat Belt Installation and Certification for 1967 mini
I have searched and read most of the old posts on here around adding rear lap sash seat belts to an early mini. From what I have read on here, the advice leads me to believe that on an early mini there will require some changes to the parcel shelf to strengthen it as well as some plates with captive nuts added to the seat back and the rear arches. I know that in Victoria there is a requirement to get the installation certified by an engineer and get a VASS sign off.

My question are; 1) has anyone in Victoria actually been through this process, 2) how much modification work was required (pics would be great), 3) where did you get the work done, 4) Who did you get to sign off the work and lastly 5) how much did that all cost ?

Failing be able to answer any of the above, can anyone recommend a mini friendly VASS engineer that I can call or pay a visit to.

I need to register my mini in WA, it has no rear seat belts...1970 Mini K, not sure if thats normal or not.

ADR Rule 4 for Seat Belts

Rear belts not required on vehicle prior to 1st January 1971. In saying that if you wish to add rear belts I'm pretty sure they need to be signed off by an engineer!

Yes thats normal, no rear belts were fitted by the factory at that time. Only exception was cars built by special order for use by the NSW police.

And as mentioned therefore not needed for Rego.

Beware though it's a slippery slope trying to make a mini "safe" they were built 55 years ago, if you need the saftey of a modern car it's impossible to pass up buying a modern car.

I get that it is not going to make it safe like a modern car but I would like to be able to take the kids in the car and can't do that in Vic without seat belts.

70s Clubbies have rear belts... and its not thaaaaat big a job to graft the factory rear parcel shelf (with reinforcements and belt mounts) after all, its the same shape.... should be pretty hard for the engineer to knock back the factory design.

Isn't there restraint fitting stations in Victoria? They do child restraints and optional added seating and belt fitting.

not forgetting that they also had reinforcement at the lower belt mounts, centre of the back seat squab...

not forgetting that they also had reinforcement at the lower belt mounts, centre of the back seat squab...

That is just a bit of flat plate with 2 nuts (7/16 UNF) on it, is easy as to make up.

I was going to do the same with my Mini but at the end of the day regardless of the legal requirement the better half decreed the kids were never to go in the Mini as seat belts or not it will never be a safe car.

Fair point, plus put kids in any car and you're going to end up with ice cream in the carpets, biscuit crumbs, sticky lollies and small toys under the rear seat, the back of the front seat will be kicked in and a dollar coin will be jammed into the CD player! I let the better half win that fight :D

Lucky for me the misses likes clean cars as much as I do so she won't let them eat or drink in the car. So no crumbs or stickiness in any of my motors

for the engineer or approved seat belt centre to approve...it is welded in AFAIR :wink:

So looks like now all I need to do is find a fitment centre. Anyone used one in Melbourne?
