Hey guys need some help.

Can I use a bosch gt40r coil on my mini and with electronic ignition?

My old coil see pic below is outputting 12v on the neg side with nothing connected but 12v ign on the positive side.

Unsure of what electronic ign I have but there is an external irn module too.

Cheers rodney

Bosch GT40R coil is not really recommended for electronic ignition, however many people do use them, including me.

New `GT40R' coil sold now is a GT40RT, looks the same as what's in your pic (these coils are potted in epoxy, not oil filled like the old 40 and 40R).
If it's working OK now I'd not expect any improvement by fitting either a GT40R, or GT40RT.

I bought a GT40R as i could not find any GT40's, Does that mean i need to buy BPR5 plugs or can i still run BP5/6 plugs?
It has a brit parts electronic ignition installed.

I'm running a GT40R with a Powerspark module and a Black Box. It works OK. But I think they recommend a 3 ohm coil for both it and the Britparts one.

I have a new GT40 coil here if you want to swap.

You can use BPR5ES or 6ES plugs, your call.

[edit]
Taken from the mini forum.uk site,
re the Britparts one-
"I believe the main reason for these unit failing in a mini is the coil, using either a ballast type or the electronic ignition type is a recipe for disaster. Ran one on my Elf for 12 months, swapped the engine(and the coil), the unit failed in minutes.
Use a a standard 12v coil".
My emphasis.

[edit 2]
from simonbbc.com site, re the Powerspark one-
"To be used with a coil with resistance above 1.5 ohms only"

I have used GT40R coils on Pulsar electronic dizzies for years, but they used a Hitachi 1.5 ohm coil, and no ballast resistor.
