Post subject: | Colour Photo database |
Recently I have noticed more and more people asking for pictures of cars of a given colour most often the less frequently seen ones. I myself have been searching the web the last few months looking for images of some early colours for my next project car and have found some very difficult or impossible to find. I would like to start a database of colour photo's of cars in original colours with the aim to link it back into the forum using a single photobucket account or similar that way images won't disappear when individuals leave, ideally I want to try and get at least a photo of each colour our minis have been produced in. I am sure lots of people have photos stashed away from days gone by that maybe we could dig out and gather in one place? The main information I am after is the confirmed colour, it doesn't have to be the original paint job (it doesn't have to be a mini either any morris/leyland will do) it just needs to show what the colour looks like so others can see a true representation. So if you have a photo of a mini or another car that is in an original mini colour that you are willing to share could you please forward a copy and any details you can to [email protected] and I will start collating. cheers, CJ http://s1376.photobucket.com/user/ausminicolors/library/Mini%20Colour%20Database?sort=4&page=1 |

Trouble is...people have differing monitors and video cards etc...some colours may not be rendered too well under certain circumstances... |

That is true and even more of a factor is it depends on the light conditions and exposure etc of the photo. But I think just as a general reference it's a great idea. Say you had no idea if Baltic Blue was a light mid or very dark blue. If you have a few photos of each colour and grouped similar colours together you would soon see what's what. Some colours like Malmö green are nothing like you would ever imagine. Would give those trying to decide on an original colour at least a starting point of what they might like. |

Whilst not poo pooing your idea, which I think is a good one - I thought the colour charts were already on here? |

The colour charts are on here and are a great resource, however they are just one part of the process I use (and I am gathering some others do based on the requests for images) when choosing a colour. The charts only give a small sample but when looking to commit to a paint job I try to search for images of other cars first to get a better idea of what the finished product will be like. Some of the paint chips look very average and I would never have considered that colour but when I have seen a car painted in it the result is markedly different at the larger scale. And as an added bonus we get a large collection of mini photos for everyone's enjoyment ![]() |

It is going to take a while to collect every colour but I will keep at it, so please guys have a look though your photos and see if you have any that can help it doesn't even have to be your car all I need is a verified colour. In case anyone is concerned I will be removing all plates from the images before display, mainly because I don't like the idea of putting plates up for display in a large collection. CJ |

The P76 enthusiasts have done this and I reckon it helps when trying to translate from a colour chip to a whole car, despite the colour variations due to light conditions, exposure and monitors as mentioned above. It's certainly better than nothing in my view. See here and scroll down - http://www.leylandp76.com/technical/tech-colour.html |

I have emailed you a couple of pics, our 1970 Mini K in 'Sugar Cane' which we have had from new and our 1969 Cooper S which I have sold in 'Jet Red'. |

As you know you have mine, I sent a few all in different light conditions, and over 2 different cameras, maybe each colour needs set/album. would mean alot of work, but say you had a drop box, or similar you could just do year, then base colour, like blue red yada yada then specific, like mine for example a folder on squadron blue |

At present there is 116 colours in the colour chart section for the Australian produced mini's upto 1978 from Acacia to Zircon White (not including the pre 64 850's) so just to complete that collection alone is going to need at least 116 photos, if I can get multiple photos for each colour I will most certainly be putting them in as the more we have the better the resource will be in the end. As to how the end layout is determined, I think it will be redone a few times as I go because I am sure the best laid plan is not going to survive it's first contact (well at least someone said so once...) There are a ton of photos already in the forum that I could use from the various events where members have taken photos of hundreds of minis in single shots, the only catch is being able to verify what colour they actually are? |
