I am going to make a windage tray for my motor like this

It will be made on a CNC stamping press from software I have to design as doing it this way means I can put it in the machine any time I like and produce another one. To make one or fifty makes damn all difference and as it is made by machine it will always be the same. I am offering to make as many as needed by members at the same time so if people would be interested let me know.

1. I do not know how much they will cost until I have final numbers
2. This won't be done to a time, I have to be able to get the machine time.
3. I will want a small deposit but by then I will know close to how much they will cost
4. I am not sure if they will fit early 3 speed synchro boxes
5. It will be in mild steel
6. It will not be exactly as illustrated on the Mini Mania site

So if you are interested let me know by PM. I ask for this because I can store the PM's for record and it will be simpler to do it this way. I think 50 would be a good number to keep the price down so lets see if how it goes. When received it will be flat not curved as in the picture and will require you to fit it.

I'd think about it up to about $100 ......

I Made stamping dies for a while, so i DO understand the work that goes into a job like this, but 2-3 Hp is only a twist of the boost knob away for me...

I wouldn't do it if the price were to go over $100, as a matter of fact I think that would be expensive. I will price it on 50 units and see where it ends up. The beauty of doing it this way is the fact that they are all EXACTLY the same, and we can punch the holes in them for fixing. The only variable would be the person fitting it. I have also thought of getting the steady bar bracket under the thermostat made but there are two folds in that and it would be a bit more expensive than what some may think reasonable. I can make anything like this eg. sumpguards etc but only on a fairly large number of units, no one offs so to speak. The only problem is it has to be done when the machines are idle from other jobs and this could be happening in the nearish future.

BTW I am not doing this for money. It just occured to me that you guys could benefit from what I am going to do anyway. I have enough to do and I haven't even started on the van yet, which I saw for the first time in months today when I called into the blasting shop. High fill primer and its out of there and I can start building.

keiths one is simpler and he sells his for 13 quid so keep that in mind when doing them.
Its amazing keith sent that picture to me as he had just put it in that morning and someone else asked me and ow and behold its all over the net.
I hope he doesnt get peeved at me for sending out a picture as he spent time and effort developing it.
Im also looking at doing them over here for future reference, but it will all come down to cost again.

I have discusssed windage trays on MM and was aware that KC had designed one that in his own words was to eliminate the instalment hassles he thought some people may have with the Mini Mania tray. he also made the point about the drain back holes and I agree with him that they only work when the car is stopped so I am not putting them in mine. !3 quid plus postage = $60 or thereabouts. I am not doing this for profit so really don't care what others are worth. If you guys like the price then good, if you don;t well also good because to me it makes no difference. It would be different if I were trying to make something from it.

Well cos the tranny spits up all the oil to the crank and bottom of pistons, the oil does not stay in the gears where it is meant to be.
The idea of the plate is to eliminate this, and to keep the oil BELOW the level of the plate - only small amounts can get past this plate, which is why there is usually draining holes to let the oil back to the gears.

Make a bit more sense now?

ok Chong, pay attention

when you go put put in straight line in mini, gravity makes all the oil stay in bottom of sump and oil pickup works ok.

then you find out the real reason you bought the mini = corners
you go wheeeeeeeeeeee round corners fast as can go and oil wants to go in straight line still, so it runs up the side and away from oil pickup in right hand corners- so you put in central oil pickup to make sure it stays under oil. all good.

but then you get some new sticky tyres and have learnt how to drive a bit better and go even faster through corners. even with central pickup oil is now getting further away from bottom of sump and climbing side of it, and can get dangerously close to the bottom of spinning crank. if crank hits surface of oil it spoils all fun, so you put windage tray in and oil can't run up sides. happy again

for other cars this even does not work so they put dry sump system in to make sure there is not a huge pool of oil in sump to shift around - but that is another lesson

Is this only for performance use or would you fit one to a daily driver driven by a little old lady (which is what my wife will be by the time I've finished )
