Greetings All. Wife's Cooper's running a bit rough. Looked at plugs and Dissy cap. The spring carbon bit that takes the coil to top of rotor button looks like its flattened out and burnt. Never seen one like this? Is this normal? Alex. |

Thanks for reply. Will buy a new one. I was interested if there were any reasons it wore down fairly fast. I'm sure its not that old. I have a electronic points fitted. The timing wouldn't effect it would it? New one tomorrow. Cheers Alex. |

Make sure the carbon contact where it sits on the rotor button is smooth and no groves as it spins on this if its groved or anything like that will act as a knife and cut the carbon button to bits |

Winabbey. Thanks for the response. (And others) I checked several old caps to rob a good contact out of. They are all smaller. The one that's damaged is 5.88mm diameter. I went and bought a new cap today at MiniSport. It wasn't a cost issue, it was simply that the cap has only done maybe a couple thousand K's and I thought I could resurrect it. Thanks for the offer, but all's good. I polished up the rotor and put it back together. Certainly running better. Thanks All. Alex. |

The burning will be from a gap between the rotor button and the cap. It may be that the contact had worn down and allowed a gap to open up, it also may have pushed up and jammed in place from dust. The spark will then jump the gap to the rotor button, just as it would in the gap between the button and the four dizzy cap contacts. Make sure the top of the button is nice and smooth and polished so it doesn't file away the contact. |

Thanks Mick That makes sense. I thought it might be the timing at first. As above, I polished the rotor and its running spot on. Too make things worse,I reversed into my 850 last night. Dam! Took off the bumper and carefully tapped it out. Small bruise, but 95% fixed. I had a reverse camera, but was watching the side clearance. Ha! Cheers Alex. |
