Is it illegal to use lexan in the rear and side windows on a street car?

Pure guess, but I would say no in the current Oz Nanny State, safety is King, Speed Kills environment :roll:

generally not liked because it scratches too easily obscuring vision. nothing to do with the weight or being shatter proof.

Yes it is illegal. To my understanding all glazed areas of an automobile must be fitted with safety glass that meets the requirements of Australian Design Rule ADR 8/01 as well as comply with Australian Standard AS/NZS2080:2006.

There are a range of reasons for this, but a biggie is so that in the event of an emergency, the glass can be easily broken and access gained to extricate injured people from within the vehicle. With Lexan or other similar products this becomes problematic.

Not really nanny state stuff… just basic safety and common sense.

There are a lot of vehicles on the road with windows that are not glass.
Here is a very simple and blindingly obvious example, a Moke.

There are new cars with plastic side windows, there are lots of old cars with plastic windows.

If you use glass it must comply to the relevant standard for automotive glass.

ADR's weren't enforced until 1969, so does that mean you could do it on a pre69 car?

PS for those who don't wish to trawl through the relevant legislative instrument, it says transparent material must be of an approved material … and an approved material is one that has the same characteristics as material in a whole bunch of international standards ALL being for safety glass.

I own a 1960's Lotus - it comes from the factory with Polycarbonate side windows. Very light, they are either in or out - they don't wind up etc. The car is 100% legal.

Which doesn't describe a side window.

Noted… although surely a side window is still a window in the context of the highlighted term?

…..or at least that's how I, as someone who has drafted legislation and legislative instruments for the Victorian Government, would interpret it? i.e. "window" being a catch all term in its ordinary meaning)

PS I am not ignoring that cars with soft tops have other than glass however given we are talking here (I thought?) about saloon and other cars with bodywork I was simply quoting the reference material as that is what was asked for? If people want to do otherwise, then go right ahead.

PPS I own a Mini with polycarbonate side and rear glass and have been clearly told by licenced vehicle inspectors that amongst other things restricting it's registerability, that the side and rear glass would need to be restored to original. That said I (a) have no interest in putting that car on full rego as it makes more sense to put in on a Rally Permit; and (b) I was only trying to help by referencing the relevant legal materials. If people want to disbelieve them, then go right ahead.. but please don't attack me. I didn't draft them (my drafting is found in rail corporations and other rail related legislation and legislative instruments).

Simple, call a certified VASS engineer and pay them for their knowledge as you will have an insured answer as opposed to those here who offer "all care, no responsibility" answer.
