Hi all

I'm going on a little bit of a holiday soon with the mini, and sort of want to go over a few things before I go and maybe change a couple of things.

First off I'm in the processing of getting a Smiths mechanical water temp gauge so I can keep a check on my temp with actual numbers rather than just relying on a needle between N and H hah.

My car doesn't seem to overheat as such, but it does get hotter say sitting in traffic for a minute or anything above 80km/h - also going up hills it gets quite warm.

So this is the rad that is actually in the car now(90% sure), it was reco'd about 3 months ago, but is it enough for the 1310? When I bought the car it had a clubby 1100cc engine in it and it was the rad that came out of that that I'm using now.

If that's not suitable what are my options? I like the look of the super 2 core alloy rad - but haven't used alloy rads before so not sure of the effectiveness.

Should also note I am using a new NO bypass water pump (as my head doesn't have a bypass) http://minisport.com.au/water-pump-late ... -no-bypass

Also I'm liking the look of the Evans Waterless coolant, do many people run this? With what results?

I run a Mini Moke expansion tank on my Clubman 970 S engine, as well as a C-ARA4444 radiator I got from MiniSpares UK.The radiator is fitted with a blanking cap, a hose runs from the radiator overflow pipe to the expansion tank, and a pressure cap is fitted to the expansion tank. I NEVER have to put water in the engine, and it never gets over 80 degrees C. No thermostat, but a blanking sleeve, and no bypass hose.

That's quite a nice set up you've got there! I'd be pretty pushed fitting a 4 core rad OR an expansion tank in the little Deluxe.

You can fit an expansion tank in under the passenger side guard, I run a 600ml plastic bottle for years with no problem. Just run the hose through the cooling vents.

So what advantage would running an expansion tank give me exactly?

It allows the coolant to expand when hot and return to radiator as it cools, basicly keeps rad full. Be aware that the expansion system needs a different cap to normal and some 'long neck' radiators are hard to source caps for.

JP,

I guess my car is similar spec to yours?

I have one off those $130 Chinese alloy radiators, no expansion tank, no bypass hose but with a blanking plate fitted.

From Melbourne to Perth to Darwin in summer, temp gauge did not move off 'N'.

Also getting stuck in insane traffic jams in Bali ( 1 hour to travel 2.5 km in 32C heat, not joking!) not a problem.

I'd toss your old rad and give the alloy one a go.

Cheers

Mikal

Do you find this decreases water temp? How does it work exactly, the overflow outlet is below the cap, so wouldn't the coolant go out of that outlet rather than up into the cap?

Wow that sounds really good - Do you know how many core yours is? As soon as mine sits in any traffic on even a mlld day you see the gauge creepin' up

Ive got a 2 core chinese job cooling my 1275 spi......no bypass, 82 deg thermostat, expansion tank, thermofan.
Even on 40 degree days with the spotlights on the grille, no troubles at all on standard waterbased coolant.

Not sure how many cores. Bryan at Link Automotive can tell you, I got it there. The quality off the welding etc is very good. Fits straight in..

Awesome, I think I might go for a new alloy rad with short neck so I can easily go with a recovery cap with an expansion tank and see how I go :)

Cheers guys for your suggestions

Thermo fan is always a good idea if you are doing runs in traffic.

Thanks for all your help. I'm thinking about this rad, it is a bit pricier, but should be durable, has anyone had experience with this particular one?

I don't do TOO much heavy traffic, but if a new rad doesn't help it's a consideration, cheers

Not a mini but I bought an aluminium radiator from a Melbourne supplier for $76 delivered to Sydney for my 95 EG civic.
Fitted perfectly and has lost a drop of water in 10 months.
They import radiators from china and they are beautifully made.
Really happy with it.
