Hi All,
Does anybody have a good photo of an original Mini K bonnet badge that shows what the original colouring would have been. I am going to re cast my old one and wish to reproduce it to original. Any help would be appreciated.
Cheers
Ian

I have made my own K badges from the original badge that was on the car when new. The moulds are in silicon casting rubber. The first batch, years ago, came out OK, but recently I've had trouble with the casting resin finish and trying to keep air bubbles out of the mould.
Colours are Humbrol/Airfix type modelling paint:
the ox is bright red, the 3 waves below the ox are mid-blue.
The whole background is light-grey metallic, where I used a small spray can of modelling paint to get an even effect.

Here is a couple of photos of a new old stock Morris 1100 bonnet badge to give an idea of the colours...

the bull is an ox the three wavy blue lines mean a ford in a river so the badge means OXFORD

William Morris (later Lord Nuffield) started business in the city of Oxford.
Like frednutz&co said an ox crossing a river = Oxford.

So the Morris symbol probably has more meaning than the Holden lion.

BMW still builds Minis in Oxford.

Thanks for the replies. I have a vac chamber and do a bit of casting for my model railway business so should not be too much trouble getting a perfect reproduction.

Any other pics out there would be of help also.

Cheers
Ian

I reckon there's a few people who would love a good quality reproduction of this badge since originals are so scarce (and expensive). Could be a little money earner on the side for you if you decide to go into production.

Yep I would definitely be keen to purchase if you made them.

I will keep this thread going with updates on the progress and If there are no issues I will make a few and see what happens. I plan do make up the rubber and do the casting over the xmas break.

The hardest part will be the silver parts. I believe this to be vacuum metal deposition. While I would like to be able to replicate these badge, this is something I would have to outsource. The vacuum required for metal deposition (usually aluminium in this case) is very high, something like an oil diffusion pump backed by a good quality rotary vane pump is needed.

I'm refurbishing a welch 1373 to try my hand at casting these, I tried polyester resin but it is unsuitable. You will need a water clear urethane.

As a side note these badges were also featured on the MK2 Minimatics in the UK. You may be able to source a good badge from there.

There is a gold leaf that is called "Moon gold" that is exactly that light shade. I reckon there is a real good chance that would be it.
