:?: Can you disassemble a brake proportioning valve? It appears to have a hex nut one end, but looks to me it is part of the valve body. I had it in the vice with a 15" shifter and can't budge it. :?

Are they needed?

They are, or your rear brakes will lock up in a tight or slippery situation (think a wet slimy roundabout) when you just need to pull up in a straight line.

I took mine apart, gave it a clean out with metho and reassembled with the rubbers I pulled out. I wonder if they're not generic with another type however, but haven't asked a brake specialist.

I just want to pull it a part and clean it and reassemble with a bit of rubber grease or calliper compound.

So what are the options if these are knackered?

That's just what I did.

Can you replace it with one of these?

I'm sure this topic was brought up a fair while ago and someone mentioned that that adjustable type
valve would be illegal ( someone please correct me if this isn't right ) .

I did the same as a couple of others , and cleaned mine out , are they all the same , or is there a difference say between Deluxe and Cooper S ?

I know in NZ they are legal as long as the adjustment can not be reached by the driver (or from within the cabin, I forget which). Not sure about Aus.

Bit of a pain to set up, but once done, sorted.

There certainly is. I can't use the search very easily on this phone, and would otherwise find the page, but the springs within are a different length and alter the bias to the rear brakes. I seem to think there are maybe 3 or 4 differnt ratings (spring lengths). This isn't a out and out performance difference, just a wholistic understanding that the discs on the front use a smaller cylinder on the back because with better braking the rears will lift earlier. So the limiting valve is biased differently to account for this as well.

Luckily, they're bathed in fluid on both sides of the rubber so don't wear out that readily.

For those wanting to do some searching for those elusive NOS parts or kits the following data comes from various Australian Mini parts books. The part numbers are Girling.

The complete proportioning valve assembly part number is 4313/755 (Mini & Clubman - drum brakes), and 4313/743 (Cooper S & Clubman GT - disk brakes). The only difference is the spring strength.

The spring itself is part number 3111/673 (Mini & Clubman : 350-400 psi), and 3111/671 (Cooper S & Clubman GT : 400-450 psi).

The repair kit for both is SSB802.

Also below is the Australian engineering drawing for the valve. A few interesting pieces of information in this document - the orientation of the taper seal on the plunger, the deletion of the identification grooves on the body in April 1969, the move of the '39' ident and tester's id and date to the side of the hex nut, and the tightening torque of the nut (500/600 psi). No wonder Stibbsy had trouble undoing it.

Also worth noting was a recall or a campaign on these units when some were fitted with aluminium washers instead of the usual copper washer.
The aluminium one can corrode from salted roads and leak.

So in the unlikely event of finding one with an aluminium washer it would be a very good idea to change to a copper washer.
