Post subject:  identifying a mini van ( SA )

guys my mini Van is ready to go to the shop, I'm having trouble identifying what it is for the guys at the motor reg dept.

I bought her as a rolling shell and need to try and find her previous plate number or chassis number, there are no tags and the only identifier I can find is the 18## stamped on the radiator shroud.

At some stage she has had the rear corners and front plate holder " customised". There was a "brickworks racing" sticker on the front window who i believe was a shop / club here in SA ?

Any one able to help me try and find out what model she is and what her chassis number is - i may then be able to find her plate number..

Or even better if a previous owner is on here??

David

Thanks DrMini

So would that make her chassis / body number YJBAV4 18##?

Cheers

Sorry, I'm not up on van body prefix, but yes the Mini King book says it is so.
It may be wrong though... most lists in non-factory books and on other Oz websites have errors.

That would be my guess. Other than Morris 1100, John Sneddon is a resident expert on car identification. He's compiling a database of the body prefixes, engine prefixes and relative numbers for Australian Minis so he could give an approximate delivery date for a body with 18xx.

Are there any holes in the front of the front subframe suspension tower? This is where the ADR compliance plate would've been fitted if it is a January 1970 or later vehicle. Initially there were four holes (one in each corner of the plate) and then two when a smaller plate was used.

nothing there as you describe, there is however 4 little holes under the wiper panel on fire wall on the drivers side where it looks a plate might have been at one stage?? I checked with motor reg here in SA and they tell me its likely it never had a plate but may have had one fitted at a later date when an engine change was done ( i doubt this though as if it had had an upgrade from 1100 to 1275 requiring an inspection i thought it would have had disk brakes? )

Then it may be a 1969 delivery date. There were no ID or ADR compliance plates until January 1970.

OK so SA motor registration department has no records with the chassis/body number. They need either the original engine number or the old number plate details, back to square one...

Vans and Mokes still had plates. Commercial Vehicles had to have a plate with a GVW.
Vans build before and after this one had plates.
There should be 4 rivet holes behind the master cylinders.

Is there any letters/numbers stamped in the radiator shroud?
If it is a late 69 model van during the period of no build plate this will be the only point of identification.
