Hey peeps, just looked at a mini with a rebuild engine and box and when driving it the gear stick seemed to vibrate a fair bit. I cant exactly describe how bad it was but didnt seem normal? Could it be a fault? Or just the way it is? |

Often they do so, especially the remote gear change minis. There's a few things to fix the vibration. Changing the nylon bushes beneath the stick and/or changing the bronze bushes out in the remote housing. Adding grease seems natural enough as well, but doesn't really improve anything as it creeps away from the joints pretty quickly. There's another trick of inserting a top hat trunnion bush (From a Morris Minor) in the gubbins to absorb the rattle and apply a little pre-tension. Works quite well if nothing else seems to fix it. |

Line boring the remote housing and fitting bronze bushes will fix it. Leigh Engineering here in Melbourne has the tools/jig to do it. |

Ah! the tricks to get rid of "the vibration" Memories! Best I found was to lightly rest your knee against the gear stick.

Often this is not the problem, they can rattle even if not worn in the body. 997 Coopers had no spring above the split bush, only an O-ring from memory. Pinch a spring and cover off a Deluxe or K and fit that instead, you can't see it in the car. On the last 3 or 4 rattly Deluxes and S's I saw, the problem was just the split bush worn. Once it touches the top of the housing there is no preload to hold the gearstick firm. New split ring fixed them all. If I can't buy em I machine one out of nylon or HDPE plastic. |

The Minor bush is a low cost solution. A bit of (old?) heater hose can be used as a zero cost solution but its no where near as durable. You will need the hose solution if you use a Quikshift and just put up with the maintenance. Cheers, Ian |
