do i need to unplug the battery when useing a stick welder on my car?

Yeah do it as a precaution.
Even though you can hold metal while you weld it (it doesnt carry any currnet), electrical bits could be effected if you don't unplug the battery first.

Um I think there is current there it is just all going through the earth from the welder instead of using big willy as an earth :D :P Electricity takes the shortest and easiest path to earth it'self out. Wires have less resistance than you do.

Hence you stick your bum in the air whilst kneeling if you are caught in a electrical storm (and keep your head down) idea is that the lightning hits your bum and goes and earths out at your knees instead of hitting your head and sending current through your brain and heart, hence you are more likely to survive.

Yes.

If not, you run the risk of:
a) buring out your wiring loom & a possible fire
b) destroying the diodes in your alternator
c) blowing up (literally) your battery

Not worth the risk when all you have to do is remove the earth clamp IMHO.

all done removed the earth clamp tried welding but looks as if i need a oxy or mig as the stick wont weld thin metal anyway its tacked so all good :)

i would reccomend mig :| oxy is wayyyy too hard, for me anyway, i still blow holes in 1mm steel...although i am learning. but if mig is accesible, go that over oxy anyday!
