Hey guys, someone sent me a engine number that is 9FSA73.... it looks like a mk1 engine but the prefix for mk1 is 9FSAY. Could this be a different engine or is it more likely they have made a typo?

Not an engine number I am familiar with but this one has a 9FSA7 as well.

If the engine was a 1 litre I would say that the 7 was an upside down L

Most likely a typo on the part of the owner, or he may be reading off a typo from the vehicle registry documents which is most common.

You can see it is a 1275 from the gap to the thermostat housing from the rocker cover as well as the extra bolts. You can also see there's a tappet cover breather if you zoom in as well, so its a Cooper S block which will correctly have a 9FSAY prefix if it is a Mk1. Alternately it may have been restamped with an error at one point after the block was decked, still, not much harm. The numbers may lie, but not the casting.
