Post subject:  ever actually been defected for wheels?

I found one story that someone got defected but anyone else had wheels wider then arches and got done? if so how much were they out by?

There was somebody on the forum who got defected for having wheels 'too wide' which was fixed by setting the camber a little more - it was a bit stupid really. Only time I've ever heard of it.

Here are some mini specific points..

An important requirement for all replacement wheels is that the wheel track must not be increased by more than
25mm beyond the maximum specified by the vehicle manufacturer for that vehicle

Unladen weight: Up to 800kg
Maximum rim width: 153mm (6 inches)

Front wheel drive vehicles
Except where the original manufacturer provides to the contrary, front wheel widths shall be no more than 26mm
greater than the widest optional wheel offered by the vehicle manufacturer.

The wheel and tyre must be contained within the body work or mudguards (including any flares) when the
wheels are in the straight ahead position.

The fitment of wheel spacers (or adaptors for dual wheel conversions) between the wheel mounting face
and the road wheel is not permitted unless fitted as original equipment by the vehicle manufacturer

Don't know why you are asking how much they were out by because according to the rules in the post by timmy above, >0mm protrusion is illegal - pretty simple really, they are either "contained within" or they are not. There is no room for interpretation, or relaxation. That is like asking how pregnant a woman is or how dead someone is - they either are or they are not.

The reason im asking is because obviously someone who has 1 inch out will draw more attention then someone with 5mm. Its like someone with a exhaust thats a couple dbs over or someone who has 20dbs over.

There is a difference between NSW and SA, as an example.
Here, if the tread is covered when viewed from above, they are legal.
IN SA they are not, the guards must cover the sidewalls too. Hence a Mk1S had to have flares fitted down there.

Yes, someone with wheels an inch out will be more likely to be picked up than someone with them 5mm out. And there is room for interpretation - are we talking about the top of the guard or the bottom? Are we talking the tyre itself or the treaded area?

The law leaves no room for interpretation but in reality the police will either notice it or they won't. And they'll be more likely to notice it if it's obvious.

Mine is obvious.

Though I haven't been defected yet I will be replacing the outers to make it legal (split rim). This was an error on my offset measurement, I think you'd be crazy to deliberately protrude your tyres when buying new wheels, particularly in Queensland.

my current 5 inches are jus on the border. the 5.5 inches i was will push out 8mm... so it will be a close call.. guess i could always keep my 5 inches and just swap if needed

I was chatted about it and given a notice to rectify. This was achieved by dialling in a little more negative camber. 10 x 6 Miniators shod with Yoky A008s under MKII S flares. There was no defect notice. Cop was a knob might I add.

It happens. While I respect and really appreciate what our police do, some just are.

On a slight tangent - my brother was driving our hilux down the highway in a 100km/h zone, and it changed to an 80km/h zone, so he slowed down. Not long after, the police car behind him turned on their sirens and pulled him over.

The young policeman came over and told my brother his brake lights weren't working. He said they were, and pressed the brake pedal, and they turned on. Policeman then asked why they didn't work before, and my brother told him he just took his foot off the accelerator - the engine braking did the work.

The policeman went back to talk to the other bloke in the car, and the older policeman was just laughing. I think the young guy had never driven a manual before or something. But my brother was still given a warning :/

well i went the 12 x 5.5 instead of the 12x5... ordered today from minisport uk with dhl express shipping so hopefully they will be here soon.. current tyres have been on her for 14 years so i think time they came off lol

Not quite Mini related but Police related. I was coming home from work on my Z50 and a cop passed me in the opposite direction, I saw him look at me then he vertually spun his bommodore on the spot, lights and sirens on he pulled me over. You should have seen the look on his face when I took my helmet off and he saw an old fart riding a mini bike, I bet he was thinking he got some kid on an unregistered pit bike. He just checked it out, never even asked for my licence, and asked why I rode such a tiny bike.
