Post subject:  Converting Alternators

Hey I wanna put in a Japanese alternator, as a temporary replacement for the stock Lucas one till I can find a good high amperage Lucas. How do I go about it? I'm assuming that the Japanese unit has the controler inside so I'll have to disconect the control module - is it just "disconect the two wires from the module and join them together" (since the output is already converted inside the alt)?

Also the lucas unit has 3 wires going to it: Brown/yellow and Brown/green that go to the brushes one of these is ground I'd imagine and the thick Red wire another spade on the alt is empty.
The Japanese unit has 3 input connections in all: two spade terminals in a molded socket (one spade is vertical the other is horizontal) and a screw terminal on the side (its connected to one of the brushes so I'm assuming its ground).

They are no markings on any terminals so what goes where?

Cheers.

You obviously have the early Lucas 15AC alt with the external control box. I replaced mine with a later alternator from a Clubbie- you just connect the brown/yellow wire in the plug to the `IND' terminal on alternator with a jumper, wire and leave the brown/green one (field connection) off- tape it up.
The old Lucas regulator can stay there and not do anything, or else pull its plug out. Doesn't matter.

A late Bosch alternator is wired the same way- probably Jap ones too. 8)

Thanks mate, can I be especialy dumb and ask - where does the red wire go?

The Jap alt. does not have any connection markings what do you reckon each connection should lead to (ie brushes)?

No idea about the Jap special but I swaped and old and rebuilt (not working) ac14 with an AC 17 lucas.
I only placed 2 wires to the starter + Thick wires and the other thin wire to the warning light on the bincal.

If that heps. No idea on colours as everything has been bodged.

but hope it helps

You see the problem is that the alt has a moulded socket with two forks and no markings and a screw on connection on the side again with no markings (I know it goes to one of the brushes) so I have no idea whre + is.

Does anyone know how the whole alternator thing works - ie whats the input whats the output?

The biggest alternator terminal (sometimes a stud and nut) is +ve, and goes to the battery, via the starter solenoid terminal.
What is the alternator off- I'd go to the wreckers and have a look, or ask an auto leccie..
