Didn't get your name as it happened so fast but thanks to the bloke who helped me and the missus out today when I'd broken down on the corner of Greenhill and Goodwood road (lime green 1964 Morris Mini smooth roof van).

I've only just restored the van and had overzealously fitted a rubber seal on the petrol cap that was too thick.

This effectively sealed the petrol tank so no air could get in and a vacuum formed in the fuel tank to the point where the mechanical fuel pump couldn't physically suck any more petrol out so the van stalled.

Easily fixed as the air rushing into the fuel tank once I removed the petrol cap broke the vacuum.

I'm now installing a thinner petrol cap seal so air can get in as the petrol level drops.

Cheers

Dave

Isn't there a breather hose on tank? If not it should have a vented cap.

Exactly the same thing happened to my van - a vented cap that didn't vent. Took a while to work that one out!

Easy fixed, just drill a hole in the bottom of the fuel tank to let air in.
