I have cooling problems in my moke My question is this (details of motor at bottom) I do not have a heater and thus just have a plate over the head heater outlet (The outlet on the clutch end of motor). When I removed this plate and started the car the water basically just sat idle in it. Shouldn't the water pump be pressuring the water in the head and forcing it out of here? (ie waiting for thermostat to open then enter the top of radiator and cooling as it gets to the bottom, ready to do another trip through the head) I'm thinking the cast iron water pump may need replacing as it isn't circulating the water? Or I am misunderstanding something?? Any other ideas about fixing it? It is an 1100cc motor, bog stock standard with single 1 1/4 su, standard bore. standard head and exhaust system. Was fully rebuilt by prior owner and would have done less than 500kms since I have had it and since rebuild. It runs great. Radiator is fine (kept my worked GT motor cool driving like a race driver in the middle of summer). New 74deg thermostat. Gauge is a new smiths capillary and reads 90-100 degrees on not a hot day after short period of open rd driving (ie driving around 100km hr). Plastic fan. Running coolant. Tuned correctly. Compression is 105, 105, 115, 105 (from clutch end) Thanks Brenton EDIT: FOUND THE ANSWER TO THIS QUESTION, BUT I STILL HEATING DRAMAS, ANY IDEAS? |

I think, not 100% sure, the heater system relies on the other hose, one in lower road, to 'draw' water through system. The pump doesn't 'pressurise' the system, it just circulates the water, the pressure comes from heat expansion. Imagine a water pump pumping water from a bucket then back in top, the level doesn't change. What is the actual problem, when does it happen? |

Ok had a better look today. Water pump is working fine. I rev it causing pump to increase and water comes out. So that's all fine and my logic was correct (just at idle to amount of water it is pumping is equal to amount going through by-pass hose, so appears as doing nothing) But I still have my heating problem. Any ideas? |

I'm no expert but:- My daughters 1100 has a bypass hose between the head and the pump. With the engine running the pump pulls water from the head and pushes it into the block and it flows to the head and around and around until the thermostat opens. Now the pump pulls water from the head via a little hose and from the radiator via a big hose and pushes the water into the block and on we go again, but with the thermostat open the water will circulate back into the radiator. With the thermostat closed and the radiator cap on, the pump can only pull water from the head via the bypass hose and circulate the water that way. If you remove the radiator cap, the pump should be able to pull the water out of the radiator and push it into the block and I would think it would pour out of the Heater hose hole in the head ? With a 74 deg thermostat I would expect the engine to run at a steady 80 degrees. This is what my daughters 1100 has and does. |

We had overheating too. Pulled out thermostat. Dangled in a pot of water on the stove and heated the water. Thermostat never opened. Not even a fraction with the water boiling ! Replaced thermostat and all is now fine. |

The water pressurises before it will blow out of the engine. Other than that the water will gravity feed to the outlet if you take the radiator cap off. |
