OK, I'm hopeless.

I have always struggled with this forum when trying to search for a specific thread. :?

Let's say I am after a particular thread I remember reading months ago (or years ago). If I know the subject, but maybe not the actual title of the thread, how can I search for it on the forum?

Every time I try to find the thread, with any key-words I can think of, I get hundreds of hits - none of which seem even remotely related.

Any ideas?

Watto you can try and narrow it down by using the filters in the search function. If you know it the thread was in Mini Chat then you can narrow the search to only part of the forum. You can also use the 'search within' funtion to further narrow it down. So if the know the thread you are searching for has key words written by the original poster then you can select to search only in the 'Topic Titles' or only in 'First post of topics only' . That way you will only retrieve results that had the key word in wither the title or the first post. If you knowe a time frame you can narrow down to only search within the time frame also.

If how ever you are like me and only vaguely remember reading something a while back where Dr mini mentioned something useful about the changeover dates for cranks, then you are stuck with searching on a couple of words and then trawling through post after post until you find it !!!

OK, great, thanks Simo... :?

Maybe I need some memory help as well.

I am trying to find the old thread about Project X. Can anyone help? When I try to search on project x, or "project x" it ignores the x - obviously thinking x is an unknown quantity, when in fact x is the critical element in this case.

Cheers,
Watto.

Someone else was trying to find it too! Not sure if that name is of any use to you in case he has more info.

X marks the spot...I think the problem is only two search terms "Project" and "X"...think there is a three letter minimum for searching? Anywho, searching on Project X the search engine ignores the x.

So

You need to search on the most obscure (rather than the overused unique!!) words that you recall from the story...

PS found the poster...

If you remember who posted in that thread include the poster's username in the Author search box to further narrow it down.

Love the poster....

It never ceases to amaze me that I can spend hours (OK, minutes) trying to search for something on ausmini without success, but other people can find anything within seconds (OK, minutes).

Just makes me feel so inadequate.

Thanks Tim for finding the thread.

Cheers,
Watto.

No worries Watto. It took me a couple of tries, but I used wildcards to find it.

Something like project*x* found it I think.

I still dont know what it looks like though!!

Cheers.

I have copied the url and stuck it in a Word file so I will never lose it again - as long as I remember where I put the Word file. :-)

If you really need to keep the contents of a web page and you think it might change or disappear when you next search then use the Save As menu item of the browser. I use the Web Page Complete option so as to preserve all the text and pictures together. It's very useful for saving eBay listings that I know will disappear.

If it does disappear, the way back machine will probably work too (It does for the old GT forum anyway)

It's all sounding too complicated for my poor little brain.

If I save the webpage, then I just have to remember where I saved the file to.

Way Back machine? Sounds like something a hippie would use.

Why not put it in the same place you plan to put that Word file with the url?
