Post subject:  Question re fuel tank pipe

Hi all,

I'm using a fuel tank clean and restore kit.

Step 1 is clean - done
Step 2 is prep the metal - done

Step 3 is coat the product on the inside walls of the tank.

BUT - I note this fuel pickup pipe which will lays at the bottom of the tank.

So I can't coat this or it will not function. I can remove it (even that may be difficult) but I don't think I'd be very easy to re-install!

Any advice?

You can just remove it but make sure you install a good inline Fuel filter "Before" the Fuel Pump.

Thanks so much for answering - and quickly! I'll remove it and apply the sealer. Needed to get an external opinion, cheers.

Wow that is exactly the same issue, thanks Carbon lol :) I guess there are no new questions when it comes to minis :)

I maaaaaaaay have just gone ahead and sealed it anyway...

I discuss it in my post in the build thread if mildy interested (clicky)

As you can see here:

Mine ended up getting covered in it. I blew compressed air through there multiple times when drying, which seemed to keep if free of paint and there seemed to be almost no resistance to the air. But I will test it today now it's sat overnight. I expect I may have to deal with in in some way, surely that is blocked to some extent.

How did you paint the inside of the tank?

Used the POR15 system. Clean, then Prep, then Paint.

The paint step involves pouring it in, sealing the holes and rolling it around to ensure full coverage.

Oh ok, I thought you somehow used a paintbrush and I couldn't figure out how you got your hand in there.

Thanks

why do you want to seal it, it looks fine, or am I missing something.

What he said. It looks so clean in there, unless there are pinholes I'd leave it like that. Thats what mine looks like in the Traveller since I recently cleaned it. It lasted 50 odd years without a coating in there, I reckon it will go another 50 now.

Fair question! There was heaps of crap in there - it sat unused in a shed for 15 years. I expected it to be worse than it was, given the state it looked to start with. So I ordered the kit.

After cleaning it I considered leaving it at that, as it came up really well. But this is a full nut and bolt resto I'm doing, so I wanted everything to be as schmick as I could get it.

I'm sure leaving it would have had no bad outcome; and I wouldn't be pissfarting around trying to remove an itty bitty pain in the arse filter screen :)
