Post subject:  side mirrors or not

Just putting it out there for Debate.
My Mini had one bullet mirror fitted when i started restoration.

I have purchased 2 bullet side mirrors flat glass for my Mini

I believe a 1964 Morris 850 didn't come standard with mirrors.
So my questions
are they required in Victoria?
are they practical as a mirror or just nice ornaments.
would it add to the vehicle or take away the appeal.

Personally i love the look of them.
What are peoples thoughts

As the car is pre-ADR, then mirrors are not required to be fitted.

I've not found the bullet mirrors to be anything more than cosmetic, they're not that useful imho. Too small, and too low down.

My 63 mini had mirrors fitted, I removed them for the resto and never refitted them (I intended to but got lazy so the doors still have the holes) because I knew I wasn't required to have them by law.
I've had a cocky cop try to defect me infront of four of his work colleagues so I told him he was plain out wrong and explained the rules to him, the other cops had a giggle at him and I went on my way. You don't need them to drive a mini just do shoulder checks and rear view checks regularly like any good driver should do.

I do miss them sometimes when I'm trying to look at things I've driven by like girls and other cars that peak my interests.

As Mick said , they are only for cosmetic purposes , they look good , other than that , bullet mirrors are useless , i know , i have one on my car .

I actually use my drivers side one but I don't think it looks that great where it is mounted, kinda works though :P

Side mirrors became standard adr required in 72. I got pulled over once and the copper was giving me a hard time about it (passed blueslip without them). Its a 12/71 so I was fine.

Many say bullit mirrors are useless but it depends where they are fitted. Remember that the closer any mirror is to you the more area you can see in it. Many people fit mirrors without any planning. I can't believe how many are fitted so the quarter window won't open or the quarter light is upright is right in the way.

You can see my mirrors position in the avitar below.

I find mine is fine. I can definatly see if there is a car beside me in it.

Nothing easy to fix when the P.O. has stuck the mirrors in a stupid position....

Yes that would be annoying, and you are definitely not alone.

I had similar situation on mine, my choice was remove door take off mirror, mig up holes, throw bullet mirror in bin, repaint and refit door, job done. Well still have rest of car to paint but getting there

Best way, only way.

Park in street or somewhere suitable.
Sit in car in your normal driving position.
Have an assistant hold the mirror in different positions and make a decision.

I'm not saying the bullits are ideal, there are better mirrors for sure ...but their usefulness (or uselessness) is definitely related to where they are mounted. They generally need to be further back along the door and high. The further any mirror is from your face the less your field of view will be.

Minisport have bull it mirrors with extended mounting to push them out further for better viewing.

Yes longer the arm the better. Its a shame too they don't put a slightly curved glass in these small mirrors too. That way these nice small period mirror would become more functional.

Almost all new cars have slightly convex mirrors, even on the driver side.
