Post subject:  $3000 What would you do

I have a budget of $3000 for a motor rebuild
options rebuild and slightly work the standard 998 or get a reco 1275.
Which would you choose Performance vs $$
Is it possibe to get more grunt from the 998 for $3000 or am I better off with a 1275( plus disc brakes)?
Is there anyone in this forum in Sydney who builds engines. please pm me.
Thanks 8)

You can get power from a) big CCs, or b) supercharger/turbo (it's hard to have both, like I could put a supercharger on my 1430cc, but it would have to run a really soft psi so it's not worth it).

If big CCs it is, work a 1275. If you want a mmmmmmPSSSSSHT turbo or a super-c, then stick with the 998.

disc brakes...

1275 would be good,, obviously you can more from more CC's, but the disk brakes would be a selling point for me. of course then you wold ahve to get rims to go over them!

I do not have discs but im aware of the legalities with a 1275
Im over the turbo phase because I have had a few turbo cars before.
Im interested in the S/charger kit herefor te 998 but cant help thinking about the better result you would get from supercharging the 1275 for a little extra dosh, plus I wonder if insurance would cover it.

Quote Dr Mini: "It costs about the same to rebuild a 998/1098 as it does to build a 1275 so you might as well do it to a 1275 as you get more bang for buck".

Apart from the disc brakes issue, you might as well go 1275 (or 13XX for that matter). At the end of the day there is no substitute for cc's.

The other thing is, once you've done up your 998/1098 and it has like 70Bhp, you will need disc brakes anyway (trust me on that one! ) you can have more fun with discs installed regardless of how big your engine is (later braking, brake harder etc).

You don't want to rebuild a brand new $3000 998cc pocket rocket then run it into the arse of an ABS falcodore now do you? 8)

Buy the disc brakes straight away,,,then you`re set for any future improvements in performance.

Ok,,,maybe about $1500 & you have the discs

& what ever money you have left over, save it ,,,& save some more & then buy a 1275 donk,,,

You can easilly buy a 1275 donk for about $1000

shove a BMW motorbike twin cam 16valve cyl head on it,,,

Ok,,,so that might cost about $1000 also

no "need" to force feed the thing really,,,alltho, easy to do anyways :-) I`m just greedy :-)

so,,,then you have Minus $500 in your pocket, so what!!!, you have a wicked wicked engine about to be built,,,maybe all you need then is to pay off that $500 & add another $2500 & you`re done (if you know someone handy with machining stuff & also maybe a friend at the wreckers for bits & pieces) :-)

It`s simply the best "Bang for Buck" for a mini on the planet

Lots of Bang for very little Bucks comparing other hybrid engine & subframe conversions.

Don`t force feed the 998 or 1098,,,it`s way way way better to start with something worthy,,,at least a 1275

well,,,,that`s just my opinion tho :-) But then, i am a little biased towards decent reliable smooth quiet power :-)

like i said,,,start with the discs & a 2nd hand 1275 power unit first, then save up for the rest,,,

$3000 gets you very little in the way of """QUALITY""" these days,,,if you want a cheap Sh!t donk, then you`re just throwing money away

grab some discs first so you can at least stop the dam thing, then get some "GO" to it later. :-)

& yeah TK,,,the head costs about a grand all up,,,hee hee,,,cheap hey???

Oh!!!, but then you have to make it fit :-) Bugga, thought it bolted straight on :-)
