This is part 2 of a series of safe driving films made in the early 1970's. There's a brief shot of the crumpled front of a red MK II Cooper S at 3:57. Also some testing done at the NSW Police driver training facility at St. Ives.

How does the driver of that Mini (at the start) flash his headlights? Was the stalk mounted flash facility ever factory fitted on round nose Minis? Certainly at the start of MK II Mini production in 1969 the flash feature on the turn indicator stalk was disabled. The appropriate wires from the indicator stalk were cut.

So he leans across to the left and places his hand forward near the switch panel, looks for the headlight switch (not the wiper) which probably doesn't have one of the rubber switch extensions, then flicks it on and off three times, all at highway speed. No wonder he lost control and spun.

I have done it in my clubman. Driving during the day and you see a copper.

On coming car. Lean across find the light switch, all the way on, all the way off, all the way on, and all the way off.

As far as I'm aware they never fitted headlight flashers to any Australian Mini, the 69 ones had the high/low dip switch disabled and used the floor dip switch but the blinker switch never had a pull to flash feature. (I added a headlight flash switch to my 1275LS._

The Morris 1100 came with a headlight flash feature on the third type of blinker switch, so probably around 1966 or 67 without looking at a book.

Seeing how the film was shot at St Ives could the Police have been testing them for future use?

The driver in the film didn't lean over to flick the headlight switch.

That Stainless Steel still looks new even while crumpled.

I'm pretty sure that piece of road was not at St. Ives, but the principle of what you suggest may be true.

Note to self - must check the switch in my unmolested ex-Police 1970 S to see if they perhaps wired up the pursuit cars to flash for Police service.

well, it's a Camino Gold MK2 S, and my Camino Gold MK2 S has the flashers hooked up to the stalk, so maybe it's my car in the video


edit: OK, maybe it's a Camino Gold Mini K, and maybe I connected the flashers myself...
