I'm trying to identify the meaning of the second prefix group coding in the 800 and 900 range for 99H and 12H power units made for the Australian market. To date British Motor Heritage and other likely sources have not been able to help.

Does anyone have any records that can decipher the following coding after the 99H and 12H codes?

99H860AJH, 99H889AH, 99H905AJH, 99H905AJX and 12H902ASZ.

Also, 99H883 with any suffix.

It is believed the codes relate to ADR engine emission control requirements for Australia.

Any help or suggestions on who can answer this would be very much appreciated.

Have you spoken to John Sneddon

He was chasing this info a couple of years ago.

I thought to myself why not just use the engine decoder. But all the numbers you have listed are missing from the decoder. :)

The only thing I have is a Metro engine code decoder.
The three digits after the 12H are a consecutive number that changes with each variant.
I doubt that there is a full list showing what is in each code for all UK build power units. The engines sent to Australia are missing from the Uk lists.

Thanks all for the responses. :)

Yes, John Sneddon and a number of other BMC and Leyland historians are currently searching the planet looking for Australian car identification data. This is to help Peter Davis compile a book that's to be published this year on behalf of the BMC-Leyland Australia Heritage Group. It covers all the vehicles produced by the companies in Australia, not just Minis and Mokes.

Here's a link to some background to the book (click on the Book Announcement hyperlink) - http://www.bmclaheritage.org.au/index.html

Approaches have been made to the British Motor Industry Heritage Trust and other entities but it seems the numbers allocated to engines built for Australian requirements weren't important enough to retain, like other accessible company records. Of course the local factory records that would normally contain this data are long gone.

This might seem like just another attempt to create a perfect list of vehicle identifiers but given Peter's background and amazing retention of the detail from his days at BMC/Leyland this should be a more accurate version. I've suggested inclusion of a way to easily access updates to the content as more information comes to light. Currently the search is concentrated on company documents, such as technical and service bulletins.
