As the title says, I'm looking for your favourite machine shop in the greater Melbourne area to help with my 1098 project. I would prefer someone with Mini specific knowledge, willing to give me a little advice along the way.
Thanks! ![]() ![]() |

Thanks guys, I'll be giving both of these folks a call soon. I find that usually prices are very similar, so I almost always choose the nicer bloke. You know - the guy that has a bit of time to make sense of stuff for a amateur like me. ![]() |

Link Automotive, Mitcham. Bryan has been a Mini specialist 30 years plus. He's forgotten more than most of us know. What machining they dont do, they use a company around the corner that does great work... |

Crank Shaft Rebuilders, they know their stuff, keep up to date with the latest machines, tools and machining processes and are friendly. Just because the mini was designed in the 50's doesn't mean you need to stick with the tolerances and finishes of that time. |

I have gone with Crankshaft Rebuilders in Blackburn. Certainly know their stuff. I was explaining what I would like done and it was pointed out to me that my conrods had been dangerously ground back. ![]() The metal where the bolts pass thru (not the rod caps) was less then a mill thick in places. Made me shudder when I think of what could have happened whilst fanging around some of the Gippsland mountain roads. ![]() Now in recovery mode with some replacements. |

Try and get a tour at Crankies, if you're a toolie you'll need a paper bag and sit down half way through. |

There was a block being worked on from some sort of earth moving machine, (Katsumoto??) it was the size of a sofa and one leg would hve gone into the bores. Two blokes couldn't lift the crank. |
