Post subject:  Tools for your mini garage

Morning people,
Birthdays coming up and misses has asked what i want. After all the usual male thoughts i considered i might need some more tools. I was wondering what you guys recommend having for working on minis? Obviously a good socket and spanner set.
What else? I was thinking a rotary tool like a dremmel? Or air compressor and tools for it?
Any recommendations?

Ratchet ring spanners are worth their weight in gold for minis!

Particularly a stubby set for exhaust manifold nuts and similar tasks.

Low profile aluminium trolley jack would be on the list.
Good Quality Multimeter
Good Quality Soldering iron

Really depends on how much work and what type you plan to do on your mini - resto or just basic maintenance, and no engine building for example.

what do you have now?

If you don't already have a good socket & spanner set, then yes, start with that. Proper spanners come before ratcheting ones too

The usefulness of dremel type tools are pretty limited, there are jobs where they're great, but it's waaaay down on the list of essentials

Are you thinking of new and exciting tools you don't have or are you starting from scratch ?

You'll want to add
Grease gun,
Various types of pliers / grips
Good screw driver set or at least 2 or 3 appropriately sized ones
An extendable inspection mirror are pretty handy for those hard to see areas, some have a little LED light on them to make it even easier to see
A set of ramps and or car stands are helpful and safer than a jack or bricks if you plan to work under the car.

As said above it depends on what jobs you plan to do ?

You need one of those magnet things on the end of an extendable wand, makes retrieving things you drop in the engine bay so much easier. Stubby spanners come in quite handy. A decent heavy hammer and a soft hammer are always useful.

A good quality torque wrench is a must if you don't have one yet!

large sockets for ball joints, flywheel, pulley, gearbox. 2 sizes, can't remember which, and the ball joint one needs to be a deep one.

I find the ones with the flex head are AWESOME!!

If going to a full restore, get a sandblast cabinet and a large compressor...

Maybe Compressor for birthday and blasting cabinet for Christmas??

A bench grinder with a wire wheel it's great for cleaning up old bolts before placing them back :D
