Hey everybody, this is Ben from J-Spec Imports, I just thought I'd say hi since I'm now one of your bretheren, and also ask a few questions.

Just briefly for those who don't know me I run J-Spec Imports, a company that helps people to source and import cars from Japan, and that includes our beloved Minis (namely late model Rovers). A big shout out to former customers on here who recommended I join this form, hi to Mark, David, Tim, Rich and James who I know are on here, and any other former Mini customers out there.

After importing Minis for people I started to fall in love with them, and when my partner said she wanted the next car to be something small, easy to park and with good visibility the choice was clear! So I imported a Mini, mine is a 1998 Rover Mini Cooper BSCC Ltd with the 13" wheels and fender flares, and having owned it for a few months now it's an awesome car. It's a bit of an adjustment from the 250kW GTR that it replaces but variety is the spice of life...

Here is a pic, this is about the only decent one I have at the moment, I've just re applied some stickers so I'll take more soon. This was taken on the first weekend I registered the car, I grabbed the girlfriend (not pictured!) and I immediately did a 700km holiday in it so it's filthy and covered in dead bugs in the pic if you look closely, but you get the idea.

I hope to be spending some time here with you good people, and I also had my first question. The aircon seems to be a little bit unpredictable... it's ice cold but when turned on it seems to only activate intemittently. Sometimes you'll turn it on and it will work, sometimes the compressor will kick in but only after a while, sometimes it goes off for a while and then comes back on. I can't seem to work out any triggers or common factors, does anyone know what might make it turn on or off outside the switch in the cabin?

Also, the whole 3 key situation is bugging me a little so I might fit central locking to the doors and boot, any tips or things to be weary of there?

Kind regards,

Ben

Its hard to diagnose aircon faults without being there but here goes.

The aircon system will have a switch for high pressure cut-out and a low pressure cut-out. See if you can get a gauge set and check your pressures. If it is getting ice cold then cuts out it maybe going off on high pressure. Reasons for this could be that the gas is over charged or the fan is not operating or the system is overheating due to blocked condenser or some other blockage internally. But an under charged system can also get cold before it switches off on low pressure. An aircon service isn't overly expensive. $100 - $150.

Welcome aboard!

My car had the same AC problem for a year which turned out to be a faulty wire on the high / low pressure switch.
It's just starting doing something again recently but I think that the gas needs recharging.
Remember to put a new receiver drier in with a re-gas.

Central locking on the doors and boot have been done before on the doors and boot - you can even buys kits from the UK for it but they're exxy once landed.
