Post subject: | Flare backings for clubman vs round nose |
Hi all I'm hoping somebody can help me without me having to upload a photo, because that will be a fair bit of trouble. I have a clubman that I purchased a while back now that came with a set of fibreglass flares, not attached to the car however. The flare backings have been attached to the car, and when I test fit the front flares I encounter a problem. The backings run down from the wheel arch towards the front of the car, similar to how I have seen round nose flares sitting. When I test fit the flares on the backing they are shaped to go straight down at the front of the wheel arch instead of curving toward the front of the car in the same direction as the backings... From my potentially incoherent description, does it sound like the previous owner has attached round nose flare backings, hence causing me a confusing dilemma? Or am I not getting something? |

bit confusing without a picture - do the flare supports just need to be trimmed to suit the flare? |

EditL: the "circled" area is fouling on the flares and stopping them from sitting flush against the rest of the backing. ![]() |

comparing them to the flares on the minikingdomonline.com.au splash page, they look quite different. |

Very different. Perhaps the question I should be posing here is what flares do I have? |

Are they English?? I believe they're what used to be known as "Group 5" flairs. I would also suggest they are intended for a round nose.. Cheers, Ian |

They look very much like the wide BMC Australia round nose flares, a wider version of the normal MK II Cooper S plastic flares. Are they made of thin black plastic with six notches along the flat section that fits against the guard? The notches are meant for the flare fitting kit that has mushroom shaped black plastic buttons that screw to the surface of the guard. The kit was not popular as it promoted rust in those screw holes. Tomorrow I'll post a picture of a NOS set of the wide flares and backing strips I acquired recently on Gumtree, plus the fitting kit. |

They look like mk2 flares like most have said. Also something to consider may be that the guards have been cut to accomodate the 12 inch wheels to get full lock. |

Thank you to those that have helped and answered. I suppose if they are round nose flares the problem is fairly straight forward. Now, does anybody have a set of clubland flares they'd be willing to exchange for some pocket money? |

So, it's only taken this long for me to realise what I was doing wrong in trying to fit these flares. Being that they are not the stock flares, they (now quite obviously) don't rest on top of the original flare backings, because that would lower the wheel arch significantly. They have to be fitted to the body above the metal flare backing, so that the arch of the flare and the arch of the body line up. I test fitted them yesterday like this and they seemed to fit almost perfectly (with a bit of flexing and bending of the fibreglass. They could still be round nose flares though because, as you can see again in the image below, the front lip of the flare backing sticks out beyond the flares even when they are fitted propely. My question now though is how do I attach them? I have a set of wider flare backings that came with the car: Do they get put on first, and then the flares get rivetted/ pressed onto those with the chrome side strip? I appreciate everybody being willing to help out a noob ![]() |

I said in an earlier post that I would include some pictures of the factory wide flares, but didn't. So here you go. I think yours look like these which are for a round-nose. They didn't make Clubman wide flares as a factory accessory, to my knowledge. If you have access to a round-nose Mini I suggest you try your flare against the front guard to see if it fits. You are probably aware that the rear flares for the Clubman and round-nose are exactly the same profile. Attachment: Wide Flares 4.jpg Attachment: Wide Flares 6.jpg Attachment: Wide Flares 7.jpg
