Hi,

Only new to this so got some questions.
Been working away on my 68 Deluxe and sorting the minor rust in the body quite well. (If I do say so myself)
Stripped the doors down today, and the Driver's side looks rather serious, the passenger's side will be repairable with a new section in the bottom, a new skin, and some repairs on the curved bits.
Had a look round and see you can buy lower door repair sections in the UK, are there any suppliers who have them in Aus ? I could not find any.
Trying to do this from flat sheet would be hard work and I suspect with my skills a failure.

If a repair section is not available are second hand doors available ?

Also while on the subject of rust my boot lid has bad rust in the lower skin and frame. I have not found any repair sections or skins for them. Any leads or do I look for a replacement lid.

Thanks

Stewart.

Second hand wind up doors are still relatively easy to find, and in most cases cost alot less than new skins and repair panels. Where are you located?

All the good parts seem to be in Vic !
Oh well, if they are common there must be some round here.

As Doc said, X 2 for Matt, I would not think fixing those is an option!

Did some more door research, it appears that nobody had repair sections as the Australian wind up doors are unique so the repair sections sold in the UK do not fit. Thanks to Tim from Karcraft who told me why.

So I looked around at doors and they are not really rare yet, but not a great many in the local area, I did find a driver side one that was really nice, not a spec of rust in it, and the price reflected the condition. The price was not a show stopper on a project like this, but if they are getting rare do you keep the old doors ? Throw them out ?
So encouraged by Project Binky I repaired the Passenger door as it was easier, the rust was not near as bad. That went very well considering I really did not know what I was doing.

On the weekend I finished the Driver door, folded up a new section for the very bottom and the section that is under the door pocket. Then rebuilt the ends.
The end result is good, when you weld sheet metal you get distortion, and the more you weld the more you get. I imagine someone who knew more about it would be able to do a better job, but a little more grinding in a few spots and a little bit of filler to cover some of the little ripples and I think it will do fine.

So you can do this sort of thing at home, nothing wrong with taking on a challenge, however it took me most of two days, so would have been much easier to buy another door.
Now do I fix the door pocket, or look for another one......?

Well done. You've done really good.
Just remember that practice makes perfect. The more you do the better you will get.

Thanks for the nice comments guys.
Only a little bit more rust in the car and I am finished, which while I have enjoyed learning I will be happy to move on.

Stewart.
