I'm in the process of putting back together my first mini restoration, a 76 clubman, I have upgraded the front brakes from drums to 7.5 discs. Due to this upgrade should I also fit a brake booster?

While I'm working on the brakes are there any other recommended brake upgrades that I should be doing? I am currently sticking with the standard 998 engine (would like to upgrade to a 1275 when funds allow) and I plan to use the car as a daily driver.

Thanks in advance.

If you have put discs on then make sure you change the rear wheel cylinders over to the 5/8" ones.

A booster is not required for disc brakes. It just aids the driver effort on the pedal.

I have a '78 clubby with 7.5 inch discs and no booster. It all depends on what you're after. Put it together and go for a drive without the booster - if you think it's too firm, put a booster on.

And as scoop says, change out the rear wheel cylinders, otherwise you can have the rear brakes locking up before the front. Not good.

It also depends on what type/brand of front brake pads you have fitted too. Using a softer compound pad usually gives a better pedal feel and requires less pedal effort. A better choice when you don't run a booster.

I used to be in the `no booster needed' camp with 7.5" discs, and ran EBC Greenstuff pads.
Then a year ago I put a booster on because I had a recond one on the shelf.
What a difference! Sure, it stopped before, but in traffic particularly a booster is nice. It stops like a modern car.
I drove Laingy's van last week (new 8.4" discs + pads, and no booster) and it felt like I'd need both feet in an emergency.

If you have the tandem MC fitted and want to fit a booster, just boost the front circuit. Works fine.
