Your carby is an 1-1/2" , should be ideal for your engine , as for the extractors , it would be a lot of work for minimal gain , depending on what the internals are of your engine , if it's a bog stocker , your not going to notice any difference , same with the air filter, you could change it to either one that you suggested for appearance , but don't expect it to throw you into the back seat when you put your boot into it ![]() |

Thanks goodie, I'm pretty sure the internals are bog stock. I'd love to build something along the lines of the 68mm however as a minimum I would plan to change cam, headwork etc... |

A sports filter will give more noise than that donut one, but no more power. For explanation of this see http://www.calverst.com/c_corner.htm |

Here is a link to the test by KC. It suggests a KN filter in the standard box is better on a standard engine than a cone or pancake filter.. http://www.minimania.com/Air_filtration ... test__1288 |

Thanks for the info. Can anyone recommend a good tuner/engine builder in Melbourne? |

Hi guys, I am in the same boat as the OP. 1100 stock, same type of filter and carby. the advice around my work(you know, from the experts) is that a bigger or twin carbies would provide a little more HP. would that be right? also any tips on a experienced mechanic for a tune up in the south Brisbane area? |

That is an HS4 carby, it is already bigger than the HS2 used on all 1098 Minis. Twin HS2s go really well on a 1098, even a stocker- but if the motor is still stock inside, the HS4 you have is big enough if you are keeping a single. If it has a cam and headwork already, THEN it's worth fitting either an HS6 or an HIF44 carby, on what you have or a better manifold. Better = Russell Engineering RE7, the Minispares C-AHT770 one is much the same as what you have now. The RE7 needs a Weber box fitted to make room for any air filter. |

If you get something like a minispares "Stage One Kit" with a 1 1/2" SU carb it can be a good place to start. Mine was about $450 delivered from the UK. With a good tune up you'd get a bit more power and a better noise too. http://www.minispares.com/product/Class ... STN17.aspx |

Bigger isn't always better. You can always fit a bigger carby, but it will bog down and ruin your torque at low rpm and *might* give you a little more at the top end. 1 1/2" is fine for a standard 1098, you would go up to 1 3/4" if it's more modified. My order of attack would be: A 'stage 1 kit' - new extractors, inlet exhaust, and air filter, same as what sako has now (if the extractors have been fitted, I presume the exhaust has been changed). You can modify the original air box by drilling holes around the sides and fitting a good quality filter. With a tune this should give you ~20% more power. Be sure to get it tuned by somebody who knows minis! EDIT - you guys beat me to it ![]() |
