Hi guys, a couple of quick questions for you: I ended up with this cam which was labeled "Mk1 S Cam"...  1) How do you identify cams? I know this one has the wider lobes, which only came on Coopers as far as I can tell. It has a pin drive for the oil pump. 2) Are undersize cam bearings available? This one is a bit pitted and would need to be reground before it got used 3) What's the main difference between small bore and 1275 cams? |

Hello timmy201 That looks like a later Cooper S (MkI and MkII) cam- 1/2 inch lobes, pin drive and one ring at LH end. Referred to as AEG 510. I don't think the rust on the 3 bearing surfaces is a problem - can be removed with fine wet/dry paper. I really don't know about rust on the lobes and whether the pitting can damage cam follower surfaces in use. My limited experience has been that it's hard to be sure a regrind has been done to a profile you want - even if it's to copy what you already have. That cam can be used in all mini engines. Bill |

I think the other difference was there is no fuel pump lobe on it either. Weren't all the 1275 cams 1/2in lobe width? |

I'm pretty sure there are oversize camshaft bearings, so you could get that cam reconditioned. Looks pretty bad though |

.010" undersize bore cam bearings used to be common, sadly this is no longer the case. Even Minispares don't keep them. I built a motor with these .010" bearings years ago, to save the rusty cam. But you can't fit another cam for whatever reason unless you grind it undersize too or fit std bearings. These days I would fling the rusty cam and find another. If you are dead set on finding these undersize bearings, PM me. I know where there are some but they won't be cheap. Also, they are to suit a 998/1098 cam. Only difference is the rear bearing is narrower. Will still fit if you put in the right place. |

Thanks for all the advice guys. I wasn't planning on using this in my engine, just wondering if it was worth keeping or scrapping. If it's of use to anyone let me know and I can send it on.. |

I'm using a re-ground version of that same cam in my build, any idea what the part numbers are for the bearings so i can keep an eye out for some... Cheers Darcy |

Cheers Darcy BHM1211 was the original number for 998/1098 (also 1275 automatic) cam bearings. Also BHM1210 for Cooper S, 1275 Mini and Moke. .010" undersize cam bearings were made by Vandervell, and ACL (I think), as I said before these bearings are rocking horse now. PM sent. |
