I have a push button washer pump in my moke.

I have one pipe going to the washer bottle and the other to my squirter jet.

It wouldn't work, and was told I needed a one way valve. So purchased one and connected it the end that sits in the washer bottle.

It still doesn't work. I pulled the pump apart and discovered it pumps and sucks on both exit nozzles (just the way it is constructed), and have discovered I need another valve between the pump and the squirter (an inline valve) to stop it sucking air rather than water when button released from being pushed.

Is this right I need two valves to get my manual washer pump to work? Just don't think I have ever seen two valves connected to any mini.

The one-way valve on the end of the tube in the water bottle might be around the wrong way. I think they can be fitted either way. There is only 1 valve in the standard system.

From memory...
The proper T piece has a one way valve in it.
The pick up has a one way valve.

It only needs one working valve to work.

I have found that the plastic valve can bend over the years and not seal, so I cut a bit of plastic out of an ice cream tub or similar.

I dont have a t-piece as I only have 1 jet.
Valve in bottle works. I syphoned water up into hoses and pump.

I push button water squirts out from exit a).
Block exit a) and release button. Water is sucked up. B) Release block on exit a) and push button water comes out a) again.
If i dont block a) when button released. It sucks air from squirter end as its easier to suck than water. And then doesnt work

So valve is letting water in and not out as its supposed to.

The pump will pump air in and out of the squirter end.

Only way to solve it as i see it is to place another one-way inline valve between squirter and pump to stop sucking air and suck water instead.

Hope that makes sense.

Shouldn't there be a very small ball bearing in the one way valve to stop the air on return.
If you can't hold a vacuum then check the valve and all your hose and pump for damage.
Pressure the system with water, it may show you a fault.
Put your pump operator skill's to good use. Lol

Yep thats what i need morris1100. Just didnt think it was normal to need 2 valves.

Lol firefirey. The push pump pumps out both exits when button pushed and sucks both exits when released. So nothing wrong with the pump.

Is this how most people make their push pumps work?

Oftentimes, the squirters just get gunked up

So gentle bike pump in the lines or fine wire down the jet fundamental orifice from outside the car usually frees things up.

I had a look at a few parts books and it seems there were several versions of the hand pump washer system used on Minis, Mokes, 1100's and 1800's in Australia. I think the components were made by Trico (Edit: Tudor). There's one that has a filter with valve on the end of the tube in the water bottle, there's one with a T-piece (not needed by you I note) that has a valve in the supply leg (looks like a standard Schrader-type tyre valve) and there's pumps with inbuilt valves.

The following page from the Moke section of the Mini Series parts book shows pump AYH9309 up to body #2574, then AYH9318.

The drawing below shows the AYH9309 pump. You can see an inbuilt valve on one of the tube connectors. The data section refers to Venmetal as the manufacturer, not Trico (Tudor). I can't find any reference anywhere to a company called Venmetal.

A little bit of trivia regarding the BMC screen washing system that I stumbled across whilst researching the above.

If you've never heard of part AYH9317 or its UK equivalent, 13H1997 you're not alone.

For those aiming for a concours presentation of your car make sure you have one of these in your washer bottle, otherwise it won't be factory original.

Since I read Doug's post I have been checking my pumps. They do have valves but they don't work very well.
It still squirts when hooked the wrong way around, it just works better one way than the other.

This is the one in my Morris 1100...
