Wife emailed me this morning saying the old998 was running rough at rattly at the lights. Hence being allowed to get autO 1275cc. She also said the Speedo died. Lights on it work. Fuel gauge moves. But Speedo doesn't. I imagine the mileage won't as well. I'll try and fiddle with it this weekend to see if it's just the cable. Anything else I should check though? I'm tempted to just get the binnacle and gauges from minispo rt as I need temp and oil gauges too anyway. But might as well try and keep it going while I can. Is there anyway I can get it to illuminate so I can actually see the speed I'm going? |

Will most likely be the speedo drive cable. Set one of the wheels up on a stand and turn the wheel. The speedo cable should turn with the wheel. |

Easier to just undo the knurled knob holding the cable behind the carb and see if the inner cable can be turned by the fingers (it shouldn't:). Noting your location, Premier Instruments at Dickson do repairs/calibrations.. Cheers, Ian |

Reach down the back of the engine till you feel the knurled knob. It will unwind from the gearbox as you turn it. Sometimes a little hard to remove, people think it needs to be tightened on with a gorilla grip. |

I need smaller hands. Even smaller than my already asian ones. That said though, the cable is only 27 from A grade. I suppose I'll just have to take time and get the old driver out and put a new one in. Heaps of grease in there too. The kind that doesnt come off with a shower hahahaha. I might attempt to do it over the weekend |

Just a thought, if it's chewing cables, it might be partiality seized speedo head putting load on cable. Also are you just replacing inner cable? The outer might be dodgey too? Sorry its probably not what you want to know but worth thinking about. |
