Post subject: | Which radiators? |
I hope these are simple questions about radiators. I need to ID my radiator. I have a deluxe with an 1100 fitted. Are the rads used the same and if not how do I determine a difference? I'm looking to go with GRs small bore project and need to know if the radiator handle 100hp or should I upgrade? |

I can't speak on the kind of radiator you will want for 100HP or greater, but it will want to be tip-top. The radiators for the Deluxe and Mini K 1100 was the same through to Clubman. Also identical for the 1275 Cooper S. There was plenty of capacity in them when kept clean and in good shape. |

Is it worth pressure testing and cleaning or just get an aluminium ebay special? |

Copper is a better conductor. |

So the originals have a copper core? |

If its a special engine, then it would have to be a pretty special radiator. Might be worth spending a little extra on the radiator. I like my copper radiator, it suits my use and will work for a warm 1275 on 40+ days just fine. There's nothing wrong with a new alloy radiator either, with the option of putting a thermofan switch on as part of the deal. You can get deeper four core rads for a little more capacity as well. The eBay alloy rads are pretty good by all accounts, but there are some good Oz made radiators as well. |

I have around 125 HP at the crank, am running a recond Mini K/Cooper S rad with a Minimatic freshair heater (these have no water tap and act as an aux rad). It never gets hot even in 42C heat. If you are concerned, add a Clubby heater core as an aux rad, behind the grille, near the dizzy. |

Excuse my ignorance but ! Regardless of the potential HP of your engine, at a steady state on the freeway you only need X (say 40) HP. So unless you are constantly using all of the available HP a standard radiator should be OK ![]() |

Pressure test and flush it is. It also needs a Respray. Can you use any high temperature spray paint? |

Yes. Don't make it too thick... just a mist on the core. |
