on a scale of 1 to ten, how hard is it to replace the front passenger side bearings?

I've been slammed with bills left right and centre lately so a trip to the mechanics is either a long way off or not at all just now !

how long would it take and any how to hints and tips?? Is it a do-able job for a not so accomplished mechanic??

IF you decide to do it, and the bearing won't go back in when you have drowned it in grease, borrow the stove top to heat the hub and it will plop in a bit easier. Don't forget the spacer in between. You can also use on old bearing race to wallop against when you put the new ones in, I will leave it to the more wise ones to give you a better explanation of how it all goes in an out, there may be a good read in the disk break conversion how to.

You will need a ball joint cracker to release the hub from the top and lower control arms as well as the tierod end.....or be crack shot with a ball pein hammer to release the joint tapers. That method is rough and will damage stuff too...
Assuming its a drum brake car The job is easy enough but can start to become expensive if the drive flange has grooved out where each of the bearings sit. It'll have to be replaced..
Also depending on whether you use ball bearings or taper roller bearings that will change the cost too.
Make sure the drive flange spacer isnt grooved on the face that sits against bearing as well.

I did mine fine in the shed (A few times now).

Basically:
Undo the castellated hub nut
Remove wheel, drum, drive flange
Undo brake backplate and tie out of the way
Undo ball joints and steering arm
The front "hub" should come out now
Remove old bearings, replace with new
And the usual assembly is the reverse of removal.

I've got a ball joint splitter (the scissor type) if you want a lend of it too.
