Post subject: | Lost key for fuel cap |
Oh crap...Moved house couple weeks back and have been using spare keys for the min since I lost my main keys. Got to the gas station the other day on E for enough and realised that my only fuel cap key is on my missing main set!! managed to get the car back home to the garage on what must have been fuel vapour ![]() Can anyone recommend a cheap auto locksmith in Carnegie/Murrumbeena area or know any tricks to remove fuel cap (obviously without drilling it out and blowing my car up!) |

Look for your main keys? I did the exact same thing ten years ago actually - cap is still stuck on it! |

You should be able to hammer a flat blade screwdriver into the key barrel then turn it. Obviously it will wreck the tumblers but safer than drilling it. |

I Don't mind damaging the fuel cap so long as it definitely comes off in the process. I can almost lift one side out enough to get a screw driver underneath but not quite. |

In my experience the best locksmith in the area is John Barnes & Coy, 733 Centre Road, East Bentleigh. (03) 9563 8022 Whilst closer to me I'm not impressed with Carnegie Locksmith near the corner of Koornang and Neerim Roads, but he does do mobile work. |

Did you leave your keys in the pocket of a pair of pants that are now folded up in your cupboard? Done that before. |

Try a different key. A lot of these locks are pretty basic. |

Very basic and very easy to pick. Google how to pick a lock and have a go yourself. |

I bought two new caps from Mini Spares UK and found the keys supplied fit either cap and the ignition! Also bought a new barrel to replace the worn original and guess what? The new ignition key fits the fuel caps.... I suppose my car is almost "keyed alike". |

A good locksmith should be able to get it off and cut you a new key to suit. |

Pretty simple, install a new fuel tank |
