Post subject:  My mini just died while driving

Hi All,

Just gave my rover mini an oil change and then took it for a test drive, all was good for about 10min and then the car just seem to die while doing 100kmh. I pulled over and engine was still running but rather rough, I could also smell burning but that might be the grass I pulled over in with the catalytic converter. I checked engine bay for obvious things I might have disturbed while changing oil bit I can't see anything. When the engine is running (rough) the tachometer is not showing the actual rpms, could I be suffering an electrical fault or is this something major like a cylinder? Just looking for some ideas so when I get it back home I can start diagnosing.
Cheers
Matt

I guess you might need tow truck, most embarrasing.
One thought, if it was something like fuel pump/filter it'll die and possibly still idle, also the cat/exhaust could get really hot. The CAS are a problem too, but usually they stop completely, then possibly restart after cooling down. May also be related to tacho not working. FLet us know how you get on, where are you?

If the tacho isn't working properly it usually points to an ignition problem.
You didn't spill oil when you topped it up did you?

Ok so as usual RACV turns up and car starts and runs fine. Must be electrical or fuel related, pretty sure it's not a crank sensor because they cause car not to start at all (had one go on my disco), my assumptions at the moment are coil packs or fuel pump. Will start testing after I have lunch

So an update, I changed fuel filter but there was no sign of any gunk in the old one, I then moved onto coil packs. On removal of first HT lead I could see there was an issue, the end that was removed from coil pack was all rusty, but it got worse the 4th cyclinder HT lead was completely corroded and there is no terminal left in the coil pack.

Well that would do it!

If the lead goes open circuit, the coil can short inside and do all sorts of weird things. Not sure on the mpi coil pack set up but it may pick up teach signal for it.
