What year was the introduction of rear seat belts in QLD? I think 1969 all cars needed front seat belts, but what year did all cars need to have rear seat belts????

ADR was effective from Jan 1972, I think.
My mate has a 1971 Cooper S with no rear belts fitted.

Why? Don't you care about the saftey of any one in the back seat? Its been 40 odd years since seat belts have been fitted to cars. Our beloved cars dont have many saftey features. Fit ADR approved belts to all seats.

My mate is having a hard time finding a genuine set for his 71 HQ GTS Coupe, and I wondered if the reason that was, was due to the fact it didn't come out with any as was not required.

And I never have and never will carry rear seat passengers.

Edited by mod to remove swearing.

ADR4 is for seat belts, and ADR5A is for seat belt anchorage points. ADR's applied equally across all Australian states.

Front seats - Jan 1969
Front and rear seats - Jan 1971

No I won't. Seat belts are not something to ease up about. And being "original" is not something to hide behind. After 40 years it might be time to fit some new ones.

Think saftey first and concourse award second.

Why can't someone ask for the date an ADR came out without being abused. Your comments are not what this forum is about.

Rathgar - I think many readers will understand your strong viewpoint but please respect the decisions others make about their vehicles. Trying to force someone to do what you think is best can end up in a war of words, and we don't want that on Ausmini. It can quickly escalate.

Swearing removed from earlier posts.

Thanks for the info guys. I'll tell my mate to keep searching. Apparently the buckle is different to the 72-74 HQs.

It is not that easy to fit rear belts to an early Mini. They are not a buy and bolt in proposition if you want it legal.
Up to 1971 there are NO rear anchorage points provided, and the parcel tray is weaker too.

When we bought Barney the pretend S (1967 shell), the PO had thoughtfully bolted the belts to the rear bins...! An accident waiting to happen, the bins would have torn off the floor, so I removed the belts.

Granted Doc, but (without checking) I think that removing belts when they have been fitted is illegal.

Prior to the ADR dates mentioned above you don't need belts, regardless of whether they have been fitted by someone else at a later date or not. In Doc's case the belts gave a false sense of security because they were effectively only cosmetically fitted and wouldn't have done what they were supposed to do in a big shunt.

I'll be looking at this shortly as well. I ruminated on this heavily when I rebuilt the red car. I spent too much time sorting out other people's randomly drilled holes and didn't want any more. Luckily I did weld in the reinforcement, copied straight over from a Clubman. There's perils in this I am sure...if you give an inch the ADRs will take a mile, but I will put them in in good faith that I am doing my level best.

Its not very useful having a useless back seat with my kids loving a drive in the mini. Even adults are beyond the novelty value of no rear belts, they all look for them and get a wild look in their eyes when they see they don't have an option...Maybe its me..lol...

I picked up a chassis punch to do the holes. The finish is so much nicer, a nice perfect rounded edge, and it leaves the paint untouched.
