Hey guys just wondering is it ok to mount an oil cooler vertical instead of horizontal. Or will the oil drain out of it when sranding?

It won't matter. Early Cooper S that raced at Bathurst had their coolers vertical. It think it was only 9 row? Not 13.

Yeah I got a 9 row. Cant fit up front cause of bigger starter and alternator.

Aren't these 9 row vertical oil coolers rare as? They were fitted to original early Mk1 Cooper S in Oz.....

You can get the front mount coolers in different heights. Both 9 and 13 row are common choices.

Why do some group n racers put them ask the way to the passengers side of the grille opening? Surely that results in warmer air into the radiator?

i personally don`t use an oil cooler on any of our"Road" minis
i don`t see any point to cooling oil that`s already too cold to lubricate properly

even for the average track day, sprint, autocross, hillclimb etc, we still don`t use them

however,,, i do fit them to our "Race" minis, speedway & circuit minis for the longer harder races

if you have an oil cooler on your road mini & "IF" there`s no issue with the engine build (IE: if it`s all perfect & wonderful & working perfectly) then an oil cooler will keep oil way too cold for the first hour or so of driving,,, this is detrimental to the lubricating of the internals of your engine (in my opinion)

oils need to be at a certain temp to lubricate correctly & if you`re cooling oil that`s already too cool then you`re wearing your engine components

it`s a similar situation to not running a thermostat in your water cooling system,,, "IF" the engine has been built & tuned correctly then removing the thermostat runs the engine way too cool & you are also wearing pistons etc

but if it`s an original cooper S/clubman GT & you are building it for originality or concourse shows etc then cool... leave it in there for that reason,,, but it`s not doing your engine any good if you only drive your mini gently for 20 or so minutes to work & back.

It's important to remember that oil coolers cool the oil, but they do little to reduce the engine's coolant temp.
If you need more engine cooling, fit an aux radiator (heater core) behind the grille, not an oil cooler.

Do you reckon you could use a Cooper S oil cooler as an auxiliary radiator? Would it be effective?

No idea. I reckon the cores might be too small to pass coolant rubbish- rust particles etc. I'd use a Clubby or whatever heater core.. :)

Hopefully I won't need an auxiliary once I finish shoehorning the alloy radiator in. It's just about done. :)
