Post subject:  Hydrolastic to dry questions
Good evening
After a 1200km round trip over 3 days I arrived home and POW! A hydro bag decided to give way.
This is the second one is a many months so I am considering swapping over to dry.

I had read on here some posts regarding the minitastic conversion however I am unable to find the post.

If I was to opt for this avenue how much modification is required and is it something I can look at doing myself, I am not a mechanic by trade but have some knowledge.

Also what shockers would you all recommend.

I think "bluewhitecoopers1968" uses this brand of coils in his car .

Go for a ride in a car with coils first before you make a decision. Easy enough conversion. Unless you get the race springs they are pretty soft, lowered adjustable shocks worked ok I my case

That seems like a sensible idea. Dads mini runs on cones with spax adjustable shocks.
The ride is firmer than hydro but I don't mind that as my car is not a daily driver, I've now moved it to club rego.

Hi I run the minitastic springs in my van with adjustable spax shocks the ride is much better than the dry set up and probably up towards as good as a hydro set up but with out the nose lift when you take off. I bought my set close to 5-6 years ago and have had no problems with it made the car a lot better to use as a daily driver. The missis has a mini k on hydro and I'm looking at converting that to run the springs as the front is sagging and keep all the hydro stuff.

I emailing the guy who's taken over the business he recons that they will not fit the hydro sub frames. This at the time did pose some questions as you can convert wet frames to run cones the fast road springs come with a mounting/ spacer ring that fits between the spring and the frame so not sure on the issue on why you couldn't run them in wet frames. I have a set of dry frames I'm going to fully build to swap into the K and keep the wet frames tucked away, it's a shame that they appear not to be a straight swap would be worth emailing the bloke to find out why they won't be a straight swap. Fitting them is straight forward the only thing that took a little time was setting up the corner heights but that's no different from a dry set up with hi lows hope this helps

You can fit the Minitastic coils on wet subframes. It's not a plug and play like the dry frames. I made spacers for the rear, also fitted competition bump stops front and rear from minispares etc. Also made a larger droop stop on the front and rear to ensure Springs are always under some tension so they don't dislodge. Naturally hi-los will also be fitted.
I removed the hydro pipes completely but you could just cut them off where they go behind the subframes if you wanted.

Be aware that there are people restoring hydro cars so please don't throw anything away that someone else may need.

What con be done to try and preserve old bags? I have several that I would like to keep as good as possible.

Flush & fill them with hydro fluid (or 50/50 distilled water % glycol mix).
Check the hoses and crimping, if crook get them fixed. See hydro bag thread.

I've been working on my Mini K Project and have made some nylon spacers/mounts for the Minitastic coils. This is the same set up as my other car. Thought I would post some pics. Btw, it's a hydro subframe same as my other. Cheers. Richard.

Hi Richard,

Good idea to use nylon, will cut down noise transmission into the subframe.

Where do you buy your springs from ?
