I currently have 6 inch socks that need replacement.
They have been installed hard against the filter box so that air can't enter the ends. Would it be better to use 5 inch socks so the entire surface area is used.

Yes I'd say so.
You can buy new ones cheap from Unifilter.

Surface are is what you are looking for .... Easy enough to calculate the the gains or losses involved in trading an extra inch in height off against the area of the top.

Cheers, Ian

Have ordered some 6 inch socks and will cut them down an inch to clear the back of the box. Might get an extra half a HP. :)

I like these filters http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/2-x-RAMAIR-C ... 1808129324
It stretches over the ramtube to seal on the outside, and is essentially a soft filter box, so you have more open space around the ram tubes then with plain socks.

I can't remember if i bought them on ebay or direct from ramair, but if you go searching there are different length ones to suit webers. I think i bought a pair because it was cheaper and sold on the spare one.
