Post subject:  Weber Carby- What's best for an 1100 engine

I'm toying with buying a Weber for my Mini, but I'm unsure which one to get. I keep seeing them popping up on eBay in either DCOE 40 or DCOE 45, both stating Mini suitable. I suppose this depends on engine capacity. My engine is an 1100 with a Wade 104 cam, 12G295 head and LCB extractors.
The investigations I've done also state that the choke or Venturi sizes vary, with an 1100 engine capable of taking a 34mm Venturi. Are these interchangeable?

I don't really want to spend good money buying a Carby, only to have to throw a heap more making it right to suit my car.

A 40 is plenty for a 1098.
34 chokes (aka venturis) are a bit big for a 1098 unless it's been highly modified, I would put 32s in.
Yes, chokes are interchangeable within given a carby. But chokes for a 40DCOE only fit that size carby, not a 45.

These days I would consider a 42 or 44IDF Weber & manifold from Russell Engineering. He is getting great HP and torque figures on a (bored out) 1098.

40 is at least $100 cheaper for equivalent condition second hand. I got 2 cheap a while ago but 45s don't ever seem to go cheap.

I have a 40mm DHLA Dell'orto on my 1098 which is .20" over with minor head work (more of a clean up than work) and a small cam. It is more than enough for this set up.

BTW I have noticed that on ebay there are new 40s and 45s going for just under $400 but they are mostly reproduction (ie knock offs). Maybe they are great, I wouldn't know. But once you realise and have another look at the wording of the ad you'll notice that they often use 'Weber-type' rather than 'Weber' to describe them.

Someone with more knowledge than me could let you know how good the repro ones are and/or how to spot a genuine one.

The latest remade chinese or Spanish ones have the little ridges on the top cover corners that the earlier Italian ones never had I believe.
I have heard the chinese copies aren't bad, but I haven't tried one personally.

I hear the Chinese copies are pretty good and the Spanish ones, bad.
A member here had a lot of trouble getting a Spanish one to work properly. The aux venturis (jet bridge part) were very poorly made.

I have only used genuine ones on my cars, but a mate of mine has a set of triple Spanish ones on his Valliant VK Ute 265 and another has a set of triple Chinese ones in his HR Holden sedan 186. Neither has complained about quality, performance or ability to tune. I've seen both set ups and wouldn't hesitate to use either, but I have a bit of an problem with carby collecting, so I had genuine Dell'ortos and Webers sitting around so I used what I had.

I had a 52mm IDA spanish copy on my RX3, no problem with it.

I'm not saying all Spanish Webers are poorly made. This one was recent, it may be an isolated case.

I think its the luck of the draw with the spanish ones Doc, after fitting mine a couple of other guys I know bought 48 ida's and had a few dramas getting them set up properly. Might be the 48's were rubbish but the 52's ok or maybe I just got lucky.

I had all problems with Spanish ones. Borrowed a mates old Italian one and went fine.

I would avoid the Spanish ones like the plague
