Went to our local dawn service and was very moved. It makes you so proud to be an Aussie living in this great country that those brave souls fought with their mates to give us the life and freedom we enjoy today. Lest we forget |

Lest we forget............ Went to the first Dawn Service at Hallett Cove. A special place. Small cove, waves rumbling in cold, cliffs and hills inland. Felt like we were in ANZAC cove. Huge crowd. All those years ago..... |

Went in with my youngest to the Shrine of Remembrance here in Melbourne. Given the expected huge crowds, we went early and were fortunate to get a spot very close to the eternal flame but still where we could easily see proceedings on the steps of the Shrine. As always, was very moving. Whilst we have many in our family who have served during conflicts from the Boer War right through to Afghanistan, today we especially honoured a first cousin the 1st Divisison, 1st Battalion, AIF, who 100 years ago today was amongst those who landed at Gallipoli. Lest we forget. |

I went to the Australian War Memorial today. The dawn service had in excess of 120,000 people, and the ceremony was really well conducted. Lest we forget. |

I had to work this morning but, as luck would have my job was at the airport and was in time to see a P51 Mustang take off for its dawn service fly by. then had a bit of a drive 400KM back home listening to the radio broadcast for various services. Must admit to feeling a bit sad listening to various stories and such, and then a bit angry, now I don't want to start an argument here but to me ANZAC stands for Australia New Zealand Army Corps, and was the name given the the soldiers who landed at Gallipoli. And the ANZAC spirit is one of brotherhood born out of war and hardship between Australia and New Zealand. But today several times and according to Australian Government websites it is NOT about celebrating the relationship and fellowship between Australia and New Zealand and remembering our combined fallen. But about remembering Australian fallen from all the conflicts Australia has been involved in, New Zealand has nothing to do with it, now if that is the case shouldn't ANZAC be changed to AAC day? |

We went to the local march and one thing that unfortunately all to obvious was how few of the 'old guys there is left, but also noticed how the departed ones are being represented by their relatives. |

I hear you, but they don't forget their own luckily either. I've been lucky enough to work with the Kiwis in the Solomon Islands, Bougainville, East Timor and on an exchange posting to one of their ships and also through joint exercises over many years. I can't think of anyone else I would prefer to work with. They're people are motivated and professional. Welcoming and very human. They are not paid much, and their conditions of employment are not as comfortable as the Australian ADF, but they don't complain. They operate all over the world in peace keeping and humanitarian roles. Wherever they go they establish themselves as the hardest working and best on ground. A large proportion of their defence force is Maori, and they have a cemented bond with the island culture with each base having its own Pa. Watch how they welcome home a soldier who died in Afghanistan. I think the humanity of the Kiwi defence forces speak for itself. |

Well said Mick. We took our 3 young children to the dawn service here in Nz. The sprit of the Anzac is strong here in Nz. We may fight each other on the sport fields these days but when it counts we are brothers in arms. Lest we forget |
