Hi All,
Just replaced my failed coil pack and installed new ignition leads, when I stab the throttle with no load the engine seems to choke and will almost cause it to stall if I keep repeating, but if I accelerate normally there is no issue. I am looking for suggestions to what might be the issue. I have also recently changed the fuel filter, air filter and oil, the spark plugs BPR6ES were installed about 1500kms ago.

Cheers
Matt

If it is SPI, there is a vacuum tube underneath the injector body that often breaks and will give odd effects such as these. Not sure exact location, i just remember reading about it when troubleshooting our MPI years ago. Ours turned out to be the coil pack, but you have already replaced that.

i'm thinking you have mpi if you have coil pack, SPI's have coil and distributor. If it is an SPI, check said nylon pipe. You can follow it back from ecu, it goes from ecu to little fuel trap then to throttle body. Check for leaks and blockages.

Ok my mini is a 97 model which I believe is an MPI but I have also read that the Japanese models were on SPI, with some MPI parts, eg coil pack. Anyway it's too wet outside to have a look for any split pipes, the coil pack I bought was not genuine, it was off eBay and only cost $50 posted from Ireland, so I thought it would be worth a try, let's hope it's not the coil pack.

Have you access to a code reader to check engine components items etc.

Get a multimeter and check your throttle position sensor.

Don't have access to a code reader, only have a diagnostic reader for my rangie. Will Google details on checking throttle position sensor, is there any links on here?

assuming it's like other cars, there will be 3 wires.

With ignition on but engine not running, one will be earth, one will be 5v and the other one will vary depending on throttle position. What you're looking for is a smooth change in voltage on the one that varies as you open the throttle, any sudden changes in voltage mean it's bad

Japanese SPI's have a MPI block with an SPI head, and have a coil pack.
What brand diagnostic reader do you have?

I had exactly the same problem and this site sorted it all out perfectly, have a look,

http://www.theminiforum.co.uk/forums/to ... injection/

orded all the vaccuum leads like I did and replace them, its a good insurance for future protection against problems.

They have MPI heads too, and MPI clutches.
The engines all rolled off the production line the same - its the injection inlet manifold and cooling systems that are different.

Hi All,
Thanks for all the tips, if the weather clears up tomorrow I will do some more investigating. I have a nanocom for my rangie and it is vehicle specific so no help there, I take it I would just need an generic OBD diagnostic tool?

What you need is something like a Sykes Pickavant ACR

The SP ACR will work with both SPi and MPi Minis. There are 2 models older 2 line gray case, 2 line blue case and the most recent 4 line blue case.
They take a plug in Pod. There are pods for a variety of makes and models. There are three versions for Rover cars. Rover Pod 2 does not function with any of the fuel injected Minis. Rover Pod 1 will work with the SPi Mini and Rover Pod 3 will work with both.
