Cant say about the classic oil but our workshop uses Penrite oil only. we service a lot of high hour mobile power gensets and mobile plant vehicles (all diesel), we noticed a reduction in oil burnt off through combustion and a better retension of oil pressure but this was changing from castrol and mobil oil to penrite the extra zinc may be a gimic but works well for our needs mostly i would say use what feels good for your engine |

I have started using Penrite HPR30 and it does seem to hold a higher pressure when hot. Not sure about the extra zinc but hope it is true? |

Years ago I used to use HPR30 in my 1310, changed every 1500 miles. I noticed it built up a thin brown stain in the alloy rocker cover before the oil got changed. Neither KMX 20W/50, Castrol Edge 25W/50, or Valvoline Classic 20W/50 do this, at the same 1500 mile change interval. So I use them instead. re the oil pressure when hot (no cooler fitted), I found it slightly less than the ones I listed ^. But it was way better than Castrol GTX. As for the Penrite Classic 20W/50, it may be good? but IMO it's over priced compared to other oils. |

I was using Castrol Edge (25W/50) for several years after BP Course Plus was deleted. Gearbox is suffering from synchro crunching mostly on 2nd, on a very old MkII S box which still has the original gears and synchro rings from when the police used it. Tried Penrite Mini Classic and was "amazed" how well the box changed gears - still an occasional catch on 2nd, but far better than before. Have just used Penrite HPR 30 as Mini Classic was on backorder, and HPR30 changes gears just as well as Classic. Neither Penrite did much for slowly falling oil pressure, but that is another problem. Summary: both Penrite oils seem to be similar - if gearbox issues are not a problem, the HPR30 is cheaper. |

I'm with the Doc I use XLD classic in my minis and havn't had a problem with it. And at a 1/4 of the price of the penrite I reckon its good value too. Always grab a few bottles when its on special at autobarn and near them for like $12. But each to their own. Find something you like and use it |

Sounds good, xld it is. Just so happens Super cheap have specials on atm. Usually use Valvoline, had no problem, just though the pen rite might have had something magic in it. |

xld is valvoline is it? im using hpr 30 in the minimatic now. and when hot the box clunks into 4th. rather harshly. and sometimes when starting oil light takes a few secs to go on. I should probably try another oil? lol |

Any 20W/50 mineral oil will do in the auto, but DO NOT use synthetics or friction modified oils. The bands & clutches will slip. |

ahhh I think the one i used last was 20w/60 lol. Will change back to 20w50 and see if any difference when hot |

You can also get away with 10W/40 in a `Matic, particularly in winter. |

so I've been told! I'll do 10w40 next time till it warms up. Any harm in using it when its hotter? |
