Post subject:  Difference between Mini K and mk2 S gears

Hi all

I was just wondering what the difference between mini K and the MK2 S close ratio gears were?

I'm not too sure what is in the box at the moment, but coming up for its rebuild I'd like to know whether the difference between the two would be noticeable? It's a K box but had things changed inside over time apparantly so could really be anything in there.

Option 2: if whatever gears inside are completely stuffed, what are people using now as a replacement?

Standard laygear has 22g927 on it. Cooper S has 22g1040

Mini K's 1st motion shaft is 17T, Cooper S is 18T.
So, on an S, 1st 2nd & 3rd are 1/17th taller geared, 4th is the same.

Note the Cooper S 22G1040 cluster gear has the same tooth count as the Mini K, however the diameter of the big gear is ~.050" smaller diameter to mesh with the 18T gear of the 1st motion shaft.

The overall gear ratios for both are in the specification table in this brochure - viewtopic.php?f=32&t=73886

So, I wouldn't be able to buy an 18T first motion shaft to 'convert it' to almost S ratio gearing because of the big gear being that bit smaller, right?

That is correct, you need to buy both the 1st motion shaft and the cluster gear.
Note there are two 18T 1st motion shafts, the S one 22G1371 (for 14mm nose mainshaft) and the later GT? one DAM3167 (for 18mm nose mainshaft).
If you can't buy the former, the latter one works- but you either need a 18mm mainshaft, or PM me about converting your 14mm shaft to 18mm type. Can do this with 2nd & 3rd gears left on it.

[edit] p/nos added.

Thanks doc, I think I might just get you to sort it out when the time comes!
