Post subject:  cam recommendations
Hey guys wanting to puchase a cam and have no idea what to buy.

My engine is a a+ 1275 bored 20thou.

Lightened and balanced bottom end.
Lightened flywheel. Running I beleive a tad over 10to1 compression. It has maniflow 3 into 1 extractors and a hif 44 carb. Im getting a head done atm but it will be std valves with a bit of porting done to inprove flow.

Id really like something lumpy and give more top end.

What would any of you super knowledgeable people recommend?

I've run a 286SP cam from Kent Cams in a similar spec engine (except I was using a 45mm Weber) and it made it a hoot to drive.

That said, as I'm sure you're aware, Graham Russell is considered by many to be the Australian mini cam guru - might be worth giving him a call to see what he recommends.

Hey Rod,

I run a Piper BP285 cam in my 1100S +100thou. Pretty hard to get it to idle nicely, but pulls like a 14 yr old with a playboy when it gets above 2000rpm.

I have a GR 286i, idle is lumpy at 1200rpm and pulls like a train from 3500 to 7000rpm. Not recommended for a daily driver though. But I love it.

What are your plans with the engine Rodney?
A daily driver that will see traffic?
A weekend warrior or a weekend cruiser?
Also, how do you plan to drive it?

These are the sort of questions you need to ask yourself before you make your decision. Everyone will tell you his cam is great and it does this from this rpm to that rpm, but it really come down to what you want to do with the engine. Once you make that decision, your cam choice will be easier to make.
Once you know your cam then you can have your head modified to suit, as your cam determines the head specs!

Are you running stock valves in your head with the 286i? If so then your car would be the perfect one to check out.

It's a pretty aggressive cam and yes it is definitely a bit lumpy and goes ballistic from 3500 - 7000+ but as Shane said, the cam needs to match the head and vice versa to get the best out of it.

I'm no mechanic though, just chucking in my limited experience.

Yep stock mk1 big valve head and stock 1.5 roller tip rockers and stock fully throated and ported. :oops:
