My smiths speedo (1979) has Sykes clocking the odometer, it's stopped at 799,999. Is there anywhere that deals with smiths clocks in sydney?

After reading that article, I think my recent 200KMH S speedo with only 20,000km up is suffering from bar magnet's loss of strength. It consistently reads 15kmh low now. Was accurate when first fitted, but got progressively worse.
The thread broke off the back where the cable goes on too. It would probably cost more to fix it than a new speedo would.
Good for spares....

Still busy with a grieving relative Doc...but will come visit some time...don't throw it in the shed or on the bench where it can pick up iron filings etc

I understand that car enthusiasts like to try repairs for themselves.
Please post your questions and I will try to help you through.
There are only a few Instrument repair shopfronts left in Sydney.
General Auto and Applied Instruments.
Not sure if they play with old stuff very much. Call and ask.
Manly now operates from home, Attspeed I'm not sure, Southern no, KTT retired, Olympic closed.
The odometer is something you can attempt yourself. It's all about time and attention to detail.sometimes there are parts required eg: eccentric gear, pawl etc
The speed side is a little more tricky and for this you will require a two pole magnet to charge and another magnet to trim. Parts are also more specific. A tester to run the speedo up to at least 60 mph is also required to accurately check the span. Smiths speedos can be set up to be to be more accurate than the speedo in your modern car or your GPS. A drill will in most cases not get you to 60 and there is the issue of not knowing what the number of revolutions is... 1280-1312 for a 3.44 diff is the starting point.

Great advice. I limit myself to cleaning, lubing and maybe the odd easy fix. Anything more than that, its someone else's job, not because its too hard, more the time thing. You spend half the day on it and its still not right or no better at all. I've probably had a go at a dozen or so 'old type' speedos and all but a couple were just rubbish build up inside.
Dubguy, have a go, whats the worst that can happen?
